Western Schools for the 3.0-3.3 kid

calvIn, anything you can offer about Cal Poly Pomona? Not stats needed to get in, but more the culture in Pomona, how close campus is to shops. etc., vibe. Thanks.

“16 aps?!? Poor Shrinkrap son…”

"Shrinkrap, can you tell us the acceptances so far, I don’t have the stamina to go through the last several pages!! "

Acceptances; Willamette, Whitworth, Gonzaga, University of Pacific, all with a few bucks; also admitted to Sonoma and Chico. Deferred to regular at Santa Clara and SLO. Really relieved about the SLO deferral, as I did not realize it was binding, and “we” are not sure about major.

Adding University of Portland with a few bucks, and Cal Poly Pomona.

A while ago there was a post saying Riverside was no longer a referral school,

<a href=“UC Riverside grows in popularity”>UC Riverside grows in popularity;

<a href=“UCR Newsroom: Home”>UCR Newsroom: Home;

and more recently, a post that Riverside side they were going to try to admit everybody who applied to Riverside (and was eligible).

Does a student have any chance at all of being admitted to a UC school (assuming good stats and ECs) if s/he has EXCEEDED all a-g requirements except for science, where s/he took 2 (lab) classes but not the recommended 3?

We shall see!

I think absolutely. UC eligible is UC eligible, even if it means Merced is your only option.

Anyway, my son took only the two required years of language vs the three recommended, so I will let you know his experience after UC admissions are finished. He did not apply to Merced.

Shrinkrap, yes please do let us know! And thanks for the links to the articles about UC Riverside. I wasn’t aware they are no longer a referral school.

I will also be interested to hear how Shrinkrap’s S does with only 2 yrs of language. My Jr D who had LD and ADD struggled with Spanish. She felt she barely made it through 2 yrs. Add to that a terrible teacher and she felt their was no way she was prepared or would pass a 3rd year. D will probably be applying to Santa Cruz, Davis and Santa barbara.

mom60, your D must have had good stats otherwise?

FWIW My D only took two years of foreign lang and was accepted to UCSC in the 09 admissions season

She did have higher stats otherwise though.

Other D (same year) did not get in to her only UC choice and did get an acceptance from both Merced and Riverside because she was UC eligible.

S is a Junior and I believe his whole list will come from this thread.

I got into Cal Poly SLO, but I must say, Cal Poly Pomona is a wonderful place as well. Arguably the most underrated college in the CSU system, Cal Poly Pomona should be a great place for the B+ student. Its engineering and architecture have a strong reputation and they are on par with several University of California campuses. Unfortunately, other colleges are not nearly as good, and that kinda drags down the university’s image.

BfloGal, sorry, I have been away from CC for a bit and only now saw your question about Cal Poly Pomona. I actually know nothing about it, but see that others here filled in the blanks.

Shrinkrap, thanks for the info on UCR. I guess that means if UCSC rejects DS, then that’s that for the UCs. I’m pretty sure that even if Merced offers him a spot, he’d rather go elsewhere.

Hubby and son are visiting SUNY Purchase campus today (brrrr plus dirty snow) and if he lands up not loving it, we could be back to the drawing board. So now I’m thinking about Sonoma State again, which we’ve visited and where he’s been accepted. He did like it, but it was the first campus tour we went on back in junior year, so he wasn’t about to commit. I apologize for my ADD around this. It’s just that for my son it’s been UCSC #1 choice, and if he doesn’t get in, SUNY Purchase is his Plan B. Brief phone call (to be continued after they eat lunch on campus) a short while ago revealed a somewhat disappointed tone of voice re-Purchase. I can’t wait to hear more details.

Both kids got their acceptance letters from San Jose today. This brings the count to SJSU, SFSU, NAU and Sonoma. Still waiting to hear from CSUN, CSLB and the reach, SDSU.

Hi everyone- would some of you with acceptances mind sharing SAT scores?

Great idea, mom60! That would be a huge help to me. Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if my S’s list ended up being almost identical to nyn8vmom’s kids’ lists.

Related question-- if a kid is applying only to mid-level CSUs (and maybe similar schools out of state), at what score do you declare their SAT testing done? I’m asking because I don’t expect S to score higher than about 1750, and he won’t be targeting UCs or other similar schools. Thanks.

S had 1850 (650CR, 610M, 590W), applied to Oregon State and Southern Oregon, accepted at both. Was not interested in anything reachier or out of state. He’s at the lower end of this thread’s GPA range, although with a moderately rigorous course of study. Before he’d decided on SOU I had suggested that he might want to retake, as I think a modicum of study/review would have raised his math score considerably, but he decided he was OK with his scores.

He just logged in at SOU and submitted his housing application, so I guess it’s for real! Wow.

BfloGal…has your son tried the ACT? It is much better for some kids. My son had a 1790 on his SAT and got a 32 on the ACT. That ACT score has made all the difference in the world. He has some really nice acceptances and even merit money. We found out yesterday that he got into Cal Poly SLO. He would not have without that ACT.

Congrats CHS2011! SOU would be perfect for my S too (he would want to be in the music business program there). Will try to talk him into applying there…proximity to snowboarding may help…

Wow, digitalmom, that’s fantastic. Actually, S took a combo practice SAT/ACT back in Oct, the purpose of which was to give students a crack at both to see if they performed better on one than the other. S did somewhat better on the SAT, so we decided to focus solely on that. I don’t think S could get anywhere close to a 32 on the ACT, which as I understand it, focuses more on what they learn in the classroom that on reasoning. Since S isn’t taking any AP/honors, and has taken only 2 science classes, we are prob better off with the SAT.

Have to say the one thing that bums me out is that S may have to focus on the CSUs, not that that’s a problem per se, but as we all know CSUs do not take a holistic approach to admitting students. S has some very good ECs which won’t get to be put on the app. :(

BfloGal… I would certainly look into SOU. It is still a place that we are really interested in and seems like it has a ton to offer. We are “chomping at the bit” waiting to hear if he has been granted the WUE scholarship before we drive up and visit. I have a feeling that he will fall in love with it.

BfloGal, what about Chico? Starting to sound good to me.

I have read the whole 11 months of messages on this thread. Southern Oregon U. sounds a lot better than the opinions I read on “************** …College”. Have any of you used that site for more information? I don’t know how much weight I should give to the messages of the students who volunteer there.
