Western Schools for the 3.0-3.3 kid

digitalmom, DD is a Tech Theater major. She was also accepted to SOU with WUE and I was hoping it would be her choice but after two weeks there this summer she just thinks the town is to small. Loves the towm but the thought of four years there was just to much for her. She was rejected from SDSU this week, which was not a surprise.

I like Sonoma State, but again DD crossed it off “to many cows around the school”. I keep trying to get her to look at the programs not just the atmoshpere. I’m warming to UCSC and like that it is close to home.

"He’s in good shape, offers on the table. No worries! "

Agreed!

I think there are at least a few more rejections in the works, but overall, he is having a good year.

Mitchwebb… my son is also into Tech Theatre. If he goes to UCSC will probably do Film and Digital Media major and Theatre minor. He had the same feeling about SOU. If you have not already, have her look at the course descriptions for UCSC Theatre Dept. There are some really unusual and interesting sounding courses. I am anxious to visit and have him get a better feeling for the place. Hopefully, you D will really look at the programs at Sonoma State. We are in that area a lot and I think that most of the cows are on the drive up LOL. They sound very much alike our kids. Perhaps a match made in heaven?" Just joking.

digitalmom, she loved all the Theater Department classes and the fact that they have the Shakespeare Festival every summer on campus.

Funny she is holding out on Long Beach because she thinks the digital broadcasting major looks very interesting. I’ll have her look at the Digital Media at Santa Cruz.

A brief description of her would be. Theater geek with her crew being into Odyssey of the mind, youth to youth, nerf zombie wars.

is SOU referring to Southern Oregon College in Ashland? I don’t know anything about the school, but the area is beautiful. If one is a theatre major, what better place to be than . Ashland? Skiing nearby, not too far from the ocean. (I’m an ex-Oregonian, so can always recommend Oregon schools. I am a Duck myself. Couldn’t get any of my kids so far to go to Eugene.)

I am very interested to see where all of our kids end up!

Yes, SOU is Southern Oregon. There is quite a bit of conversation about it on this thread.

Mitchweb… hope your D gets into CSULB if she has her heart set on it. We considered applying there for the Broadcasting major but just didn’t like the odds of being able to get any of the classes once he was there. Check out the “pre-major” requirements and impaction notices really well. At UCSC you can declare a pre-major in Film and Digital Media fairly easily but they don’t seem to have any real Broadcasting(another one of my son’s semi-unrealistic laundry list of must-haves."

Digitalmom thanks I will have her look at the pre-major at Long Beach. I think she is better off staying in the Tech Theater area where she has some experience. Back in the day I majored in Broadcast and Radio Communications at SFSU. They had a decent program, equipment and studio. I would have your son defiantly take a look at SFSU if that is what he is really interested in.

Best of luck

Thanks Mitchwebb… that was also my major at UW Madison. I know SFSU has a good program but it is too close to home for us. It seems that both of our kids are wavering between Technical Theatre and broadcasting. I think what my son really wants is to be a technical director. We will see. Keep us updated.

DS accepted by UCSC - hurray! Santa Cruz was his reach and probably where he’s going! His uber reach is Davis, but he won’t hear until the end of next week and it seems highly unlikely. Until today he had only had acceptances and I was worried he’d become a bit cocky–strange for a 3.x student… This evening he checked his SDSU status and got his first rejection. In an odd way, I think it’s a good thing, and “safe” since he hadn’t had his heart set on it at all. So Santa Cruz here he comes. I send positive vibes to all on this thread and hope that all of our children go on to attend the schools that are the best for for who they are --and who they will evolve into…

shrinkrap’s son rejected from SDSU too… that’s three in a row. Pacific Northwest, here we come!

Me to Calvin last summer…
^ So; Are you and yours thinking a shot at UCSC are is worth a UC app and subject tests? I am still thinking about this.

"Yup, Shrinkrap. I’ve thrown away my hard-earned money on worse things than a shot in the dark like this! S has visited and loves UCSC. He has good ECs and an essay (finally…) that may do the trick. If not, so be it. At least he will have tried. "

Nice!

Shrinkrap, you rock! I love that you found that post. Thank you!

PNW is a great place to go to school! Willamette U is in my hometown: beautiful campus, great school. Can’t miss with Portland!

What about UoPacific? i tried to get my S to apply there but he was done with apps. I think it is a great school also.

Arghhhh…in case their is confusion…

"…Thanks historymom et al, if yoo are still year! This thread will son have its 1st anniversary! "

=

SO glad I found this thread in time! Thanks historymom et al, if you are still thread! This thread will soon have its 1st anniversary!

Still haven’t visited UoPacific. I like that merit aid for engineering at least, was up to 5 instead of 4 years.

Might visit in April if son is not sold on PNW.

Two UCR applicants waitlisted on the UCR board… wow…

Make that at least three… son was offered the waitlist at UCR!!

D visited Western Washington U yesterday - LOVED it!!
Husband loved it too - especially the good $ for an out-of-state school and away from home experience.
Most of her PNW decisions have come in, good or bad, now it’s coming to decision time.

This thread has been so useful and encouraging. Thanks Shrinkrap for your posting of acceptances/w-lists/etc., it’s very helpful to us 3.0 + parents to know what works! I think there are so many fantastic opportunities, last year I was terrified that being a B, B+, A- student was limiting (that’s what “they” tell you), but I find just the opposite. If my daughter had a higher GPA I/she would still be considering the same schools!

UCR is waitlisting???!!! Oh my, how things have changed just in the last couple of years. It will be interesting how much the enrollment in Merced goes up (actually, I heard it is a pretty good school).

Update… no surprises
