Western Schools for the 3.0-3.3 kid

Thanks Morton0,
We have indeed been to SLO once but are going for admitted student weekend. I am concerned about the Ca. budget cuts and think in many ways he would be better off outside of California. I am thinking that Santa Cruz probably will not be a good fit(outdoor beauty has no real draw for the little bugger) and the college system seems strange to me. We are very fortunate to have some good choices and I am hoping for that “ahh ha” moment in Corvallis.

I know it’s not “Western”, but wondering if anyone took a look at Kansas University. It matches my son’s interests on several levels and admissions seems to be fairly easy for kids in this GPA range. Anyone have a perspective on KU to share?

No personal perpective, but a lot of Colorado (where I live) kids go to KU - some because they didn’t have the stats for the increasingly-competitive Boulder, others because it offered the Big-U experience but was farther from home. Three families I know who sent their Colorado kids to KU were in fact fairly ambitious, academic/doctor types - so my thought is if KU passed their muster it would pass most parents’. One family specifically mentioned that KU was a good place for their talented but somewhat unfocused son to “find” himself academically.

I applied to KU. Very nice school. They are not cheap OOS, however, and no WUE.

My son had KU in his top three - chose U of A instead. I thought KU looked like a terrific school and everyone I dealt with there was extremely helpful and friendly.

Thanks for the info on KU. My son’s top choice is University of Oregon at this point, but I’m getting increasingly worried it will be hard for him to get in with what looks to be somewhere around a 3.2 GPA. KU seems like another similar option, as does University of Arizona. He wants a bigger, more traditional school with big sports (especially football).

Dumb question, but is KU actually the University of Kansas?

nothing dumb about it - and the answer is, yes University of Kansas.

Update…some surprises

Visited So Cal last weekend, and surprisingly impressed with CPP.
LMU’s preview days was SPCETACULAR*…unfortunaltely…most expensive, and only private school with no money offered, although all but Willamette has been a token.

BUT a token in the context of a PNW school brings it down to a UC COA.

Sounds like there are lots of good choices and a difficult decision for your son to make, Shrinkrap. But hey, that’s way better than no choices and therefore no decisions. Good luck!

Shrinkrap- Congrats on all the choices. What is it about LMU that he likes?
I am wondering if due to budget issues in Ca if the B and B+ students are having more positive admissions results with private and OOS publics.

Thanks katliamom.
Unrelated question-- is it generally better to cast a wider net (ie, apply to more schools) if your stats are not stellar?

“What is it about LMU that he likes?”

First and foremost, I think he likes being near his Uncle “Hollywood” in So Cal. But the campus is just his style. modern and sleek, flashy buildings rather than “old” Ivy covered brick. And we were ALL quite impressed with the diversity. I have not seen anything like it in California. Second choice seems to be Cal Poly Pomona, although dad and I are hoping he will like SCU when we visit this weekend. Son says that is “our” school.

I am wondering if due to budget issues in Ca if the B and B+ students are having more positive admissions results with private and OOS publics.

Someone said they actually over-enrolled by about one hundred students last year, because they expected fewer to accept, because of family financial concerns.

"is it generally better to cast a wider net (ie, apply to more schools) if your stats are not stellar? "

I think it pays off if your student is “lop sided” relatively hi SAT, or low GPA but good everything else. Looks like other than Merced, UC’s will rarely tolerate a low GPA(3-3.3) right now.

Let us know what he decides, shrinkrap. Sometimes we know better than the kiddies do, though it may be hard to convince them of that. I investigated those schools a bit, and while I thought LMU was absolutely beautiful, perfect location, etc…it was my personal opinion that the educational quality seemed higher at SCU, plus superb location for internships. Any knowledgeable opinions on that one?

Congratulations to Shrinkrap and family!! Lots of quality choices to think about! Are the UCR kids STILL waitlisted? Times have changed indeed. BTW, my daughter is lopsided in the other direction - GPA is starting to look really good, however, she barely made 4 digits on her SAT and WILL NOT be taking them again (she tells me)! Sigh.

I know a lot of students at LMU. Also several who are Santa Clara. The kids at Santa Clara would be students I called top of the class but got money from Santa Clara. Students who are majoring in engineering or interested in the sciences and grad school. The kids I know at LMU are more middle of the road many majoring in business or film. From our area LMU is a popular application. I doubt many of them had Santa Clara on their list unless they are coming out of the Catholic HS. Many of the students I know at LMU had USC as their first choice. All of them are very happy.
As far as Mom and Dad knowing best. I really wanted S to go to Willamette. I thought it was the perfect place for him. My H liked Redlands. After admitted student day at Univ of the Pacific my S was convinced he wanted to go there. In hindsight he wishes he had listened more when we talked about the quality of the school location but the honest truth is it has been a great fit for him.
I agree with Shrinkrap if your kid is lopsided I think it is good to cast a wide net. My S had around a 3.4 3.5 but only 1 AP course but had a great Math SAT score. I wasn’t sure he would get in anywhere but he did okay. He is graduating in about a month. The B student who I doubted would last 1 semester.
Can you tell us more about Cal Poly Pomona?

Congrats shrinkrap on acceptances and mom60 on impending graduation!

mom60, what was it that ultimately made your S successful in college? My hs jr S is a B- student, and I have serious doubts that he will succeed at a 4-yr school unless he molts next year. :o

Deposit made at LMU today!

Congrats! I think your D made a great choice! I know he is going to love it!

Congrats, Shrinkrap! I’ve enjoyed following your son’s search.
