Western Schools for the 3.0-3.3 kid

I’m another born and raised Oregonian (and UO grad) who has been in NoCal for over 25 years. While it didn’t bother me one bit when I lived in Oregon, now when I go visit for more than just a few days at a time the grey and rain gets to me. But it is absolutely gorgeous because of all that rain, and in the spring when the sun is out there is no better place in the world to be. I have a daughter at IU and she thought snow and ice would be no problem since she grew up skiing, but her freshman year shocked her. Two years later she’s still there and is happy as can be despite the harsh weather (and has learned Uggs are not snow boots after all). So while weather should not be underestimated, if there are enough things that you love about a place the weather can be dealt with.

I grew up in HI. Transferred to U of OR & was very happy for my 1st 2 years (they were having a drought). In my SR year, no drought & I found myself missing sunshine so applied to schools where I hoped for sunnier weather. I was very happy at UCDavis for law school. I did love Eugene but also loved Davis. You can get used to rain and grey skies, but each of us is so different.

I just smy D the above posts.

HImom, you made her think, she said the only place she could go that the weather would be better than So Cal…is Hawaii!!

And then, she realized if she went anywhere out of So Cal where she has been accepted, she would be dealing with some sort of “weather”…be it hot in Arizona, snowy and cold in Colorado, snowy, cold and hot in New Mexico, rainy and dreary in San Francisco, Ore and WA and New York–hot, humid, cold and snowy.

So I guess, she just needs to figure it out…

or maybe go to San Diego!!

My SO CAL daughter went to school in NOR CAL and hated the cold weather- and it is better than WA or OR. She lasted one year. But a super involved, great student will be happy anywhere and make the weather an adventure. My daughter was neither. She’s a hairdresser. It all worked out in the end.

Bumping this up
D submitted Sonoma State and has Cal Poly SLO ready to go. She is struggling with committing on a major for Cal Poly.

Glad to see this bumped up. Thanks mom60. My S has one essay done but one more still to write before the November 1st early notification deadline for a few of his schools. Applying to U of O, CU, University of Arizona, Michigan State, Kansas University and probably a few CA state schools. Fingers crossed!

I’m not sure if Wyoming has been mentioned on this thread…but with an ACT of 25 you get a $3,000 scholarship with a 3-3.3 gpa.

University of Wyoming is cheap to begin with…tuition/fees/room/board at $21,500.

$18,500 with the scholarship.

Pretty good deal for a good research school. We are planning a visit this summer, going to wait until it is warm.

Haystack…Some great information on U of Wyoming was posted around #670.

My D has heard back from Montana State, Univ of Montana and Western Washington. Acceptances to all three but no word on the WUE yet. Montana State did send a sheet outlining how much merit money one would get based on SAT scores. The SAT score for the full WUE is quite high.
Waiting for SAT scores tomorrow. Hope they are higher.

So Cal daughter finally made her decision, what ended up being her first impression stuck, she is going to SFSU starting in Jan. We are heading up to San Francisco this weekend for orientation. She was also accepted to a bunch of schools in OR and WA but didn not even want to go look…nothing I could do or say would get her to change her mind. Her aunt gave her a really cute pair of rain boots yesterday…she may need them this weekend and for the next 4 years!! Good luck to you all!!

Acceptances to Kansas University and University of Missouri so far. All apps are done, so it’s just a waiting game now.

Well, I got a $13k/year scholarship from Kettering as an electrical engineering major. Might get #5k more with FIRST scholarship.

GPA: 3.116
SAT: 1900 (M: 680, CR: 620, W: 600)
ACT: 32 (E: 30, M: 34, CR: 32, S: 30)

edit: oh, this was the Western Thread, not the Regular 3.0-3.3

Northern Arizona University is a pretty nice place. Check it out.

Congrats to everyone on results so far! I’ve been away from the list for a while–I was going insane. LOL Anyway, getting D to get her applications in has been a major struggle but she’s now got 7 out there and I think there’s only one more that she cares enough about to write her “supplemental” paragraph. Anyway, she got her first acceptance yesterday, to Loyola Chicago. It wasn’t super high on her list but I know she would go if that was her best option. Surprisingly, she was offered $7500 a year as well in merit aid! So…we’re all off and running, huh? Well, except for Sockhermom’s D who has made her choice! (And oh how I envy you!) :-)

Tangosmom-congrats on your d’s first acceptance! We are in SF for orientation- we brought So Cal weather to Nor Cal, it was 73 and sunny yesterday, they called it a heat wave! My D was waiting to hear from FIT and found out she was wait listed so SFSU for due- she decided business major for now ten maybe FIT for Masters

My S’s GPA and test scores don’t fit this thread but I live in CA and have a lot of knowledge about most if the PNM nd NOR Cal areas. My S did apply to Western Washington as he is going to be an ES major and WWU’s Huxley is hard to beat. He has been accepted, with a personal call from the dean of admissions… I thought that was really nice and says A LOT about the school. I am hoping with his 2200 test scores he will get the WUE. Although we live in CA, my S is not applying to any IS schools… WAY to big for him… his first choice is a small LAC under 2000 students.

Tangosmom… I have a good friend whose S is at Loyola Chicago… turned down some higher ranked schools for the scholarship he got at LC… he is VERY happy there and doing brilliantly…he loves the city and has had some amazing opportunities already with research and interaction with professors… anyway, congrat’s to your D!!

Sockhermom… SFS is an amazing school and I LOVE SF… she will be in heaven there even if it does rain a lot… I have been colder there than anywhere else I have ever been though, including Vermont in JAn, So, good news, she will get to buy some cute scarves, boots and coats.

Thanks, 5boys. I think my D would like the energy of Chicago for sure. She’s a city girl (and I have NO idea where that came from since I left Los Angeles 21 years ago for the “wilds” of Washington state and never looked back.) I do think we have a good shot at two and possibly four of her other choices. Oh, and we technically don’t fit the thread GPA profile either since she has a 2.98(unweighted)…I round up to 3.0 or I get depressed. LOL But her SAT’s are 1980 so it helps if she looks more bored than lazy. (Both are true. Sigh.) Congrats on the WWU phone call. A few of D’s friends have heard back from them but probably on paper. It sounds like they really want your S! That should bode well for the WUE.

Thanks for the info on Loyola Chicago. We were surprised by the merit money but D has a couple of ‘hooks’ so that might have helped? Her GPA puts her in the bottom 2 or 3% of every school she’s applying to–her math SAT is low but her CR puts her in the top 5-8%. She’s a challenge!

Had to laugh at your comment about SF–so true. What’s the Mark Twain quote? “The coldest winter I ever spent was one summer in San Franciso.” I had that on a t-shirt once. But it is such a cool city…and not just weather-wise!

Sockhermom, thanks! It sure was a confidence-builder for my D because, on her bad days, she’s sure she won’t get in anywhere. I’m going to take her stats and her acceptances and post them on a thread here on CC one of these days. I’ll title it “Yes, even the kids without 5.0 and a 2400 can get into college!” :-)

Youngest daughter has gotten acceptances from CS Fullerton, NAU and Chico. Still waiting to hear from Long Beach, CSUN & San Jose in-state, and still pressing her to get her applications out to Colorado State and SUNY Purchase. Does anyone here have any experience with Chico?

nyn8vmom -We are from So Cal and do not know any kid’s in the area who have gone to Chico…but I met a woman briefly, who was from the Ventura area, and she told us her son was at Chico and likes it…however, she said he is a “cowboy”…literally, loves to ride and wears a cowboy hat! I am really surprised that we haven’t known any other kid’s who have gone to Chico but most kid’s we know are looking for schools in larger cities. Congrats to your daughter…she is on her way…now just decision time…

SockherMom - Thanks for your response. We don’t know anyone who goes or has gone there, either. Makes me a little nervous. I’m so frustrated by the lack of public choices in CA if one isn’t on the UC level and wants the full residential campus experience. So many of the schools are commuter oriented. I grew up and went to school in NY, where there are still so many choices of medium to large schools that offer the full residential life. We’ll have 4 in college at the same time so we can’t go private or out of state (with few execptions). All 4 are great kids who won’t get any merit scholarships and … stop me if you’ve heard this one before … our income is too high to qualify for grants but low enough for it to be a real struggle. We’ll see what happens with Colorado State (WUE - although her test scores aren’t technically high enough to qualify…I’m hoping they dig deeper than black & white) and SUNY Purchase (total cost will be just a little higher than some WUE schools). It was so much easier a bazillion years ago when I went through it!
