RSBueletz: Crud! I shouldn’t have tried to do it in two shifts. OK so we now have the Awes list and the some list. I will try to fix it tomorrow.

Tulare: Thanks I just wanted to help.

One college to consider that is just a little over the line with an average GPA of 3.4 is the Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls OR. They seem to admit a VERY high percentage of those who apply. Klamath Falls is a small city but really great outdoor activities, especially in the winter time.

“Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls OR.”
If you have a liberal leaning kid you might want to check this school out with caution. I spoke to a rep from here at a college fair recently and she stated very proudly that this school “was not like the rest of Oregon.” (e.g. Portland, Eugene, etc).

Klamath Falls is cow country, lumberjacks and hunters. Lots of gun racks in the pickup trucks, still.

And it is a small town, but the largest one around for 75 miles in any direction. population … city, probably 40,000 surrounded by maybe 20,000 more in the sphere of influence.

I am struggling with the implications that
a) portland is ‘liberal’ … um not from the view here south of SF
b) being not liberal is a bad thing. ???

OIT is a hands on college. For nursing, it’s placement rate just dropped from 98% to 96%. It expects people who go there to want to go out and work after their degree (how unliberal!) and it positions kids very well to do that.

Winters are harsh and cheerless in town. But if you like cross country skiing, or snowmobiling, it can be a great environment.

Bookmarked…

PS if it’s PC to ask about boys getting a tiny leg up, can I ask about African American boys? Insight about the leg ups (legs up?), and about “fit”/ diversity welcomed.

The rep was proud that Klamath Falls was not liberal. I wasn’t. And, having lived on the peninsula south of SF for more years than I want to own up to, I would say yes Portland is liberal. (And in my opinion, that is a good thing) ;)

Shrinkwrap I would say that depending upon the school that “Yes” that African American boys get two legs up at some LACs ;)

So… which ones? I know; I’m pushing it. Wish he would look outside of California.

I honestly don’t know but I would guess that any that have a lower AA pop and m/f ratios in the 45/55 range might. The USNWR breakdown in their premium subscription gives really good data like this.

Has your S looked at any of the southern CA schools? I am a personal fan of Cal Lutheran and LMU (not on this list since it is a reach).

^ Sigh. So far he’s mentioned UC Santa Barbara, Pepperdine, and SLO.

“The USNWR breakdown in their premium subscription gives really good data like this.”

Good idea!

Cal Lutheran is a couple of hours south of SLO and less than an hour So of UCSB. If he wants to visit those two campuses and likes that area you can tell him OK but that he needs a safer admit than either of them and visit Cal Lu too.

If he wants to visit Pep, it is also reasonably close to LMU. LMU is another beautiful campus, Jesuit and close to the beach (which seems to be a criteria for him)

I think that kids in this range need a couple of safe admits, and hopefully at least two that are financially practical for the family. Pepperdine is a beautiful campus, but is not only a stretch to get into for this group of kids, but is also a very expensive school that isn’t likely to give much grant aid to kids in this range. (D’s scores & gpa were very high for Pepperdine, and yet their FA package worse than that offered my quite a few other selective and very selective LACs that provided much higher merit scholarships.)

Shrinkrap, I’d look at University of Oregon. They love diversity and it can be hard to find in Oregon. It’s a campus that feels “right” for a wide variety of students.

Thank you!

He had visited Pep, and fell for it on “admitted students day” with his sister. It IS expensive and we hoped she wouldn’t choose it since she got no merit aid. He has been to UCSB for soccer camps. It seems mean to even visit in the name of college tours. LMU is on the list ( well MINE, anyway); I’ll encourage him to check out Cal Lutheran.

If you want to see the different admit rates for males and females, you can find that information on this government web site: [College Navigator - National Center for Education Statistics](College Navigator - National Center for Education Statistics). For some colleges there is a noticeable difference.

Forgot to say - search for the college, then look under Admissions.

I am sure my son got a leg up for being Male. Another leg up is higher scoring SAT scores in Math for males who want a smaller liberal arts college.
HistoryMom- Sadly I think Boulder is not WUE eligible for Ca residents. OOS in expensive.

^^ I like that site. Any thoughts about the use of ENROLLED vs ADMITTED data for our kids? I was thinking of SAT scores.

I’ve seen admitted vs. enrolled data on specific college web sites, but not in one of the centralized data sites. Too bad, because it’s very interesting, I agree :-).

My son is a senior, 2.9 gpa, 20 ACT, 1650 sat. He was admitted to: Hawaii-Manoa, Oregon State, ASU, NAU, UofA, waitlisted at University of Oregon. He was rejected from (wait for it…) Chico State, and we are CAlifornia residents. Thankfully we can send him out of state, because the California schools are an absolute disaster right now.

Though not western schools, 2 fantastic options that he was also admitted to are University of Nebraska - Lincoln and University of Kansas, which I absolutely loved.

He’ll be attending University of Arizona, and he’s really happy.

I’ve never heard anything bad about University of Kansas. That’s so interesting that you liked it.
