Western Schools for the 3.0-3.3 kid

Adding another vote for Carroll College in Montana.

Thank you WayOutWestMom for letting people know there is more than UNM and NM Tech here in New Mexico (I am referring to NMSU). Also available is aerospace engineering with the spaceport to be built about 45 minutes away. Honors College offers lots of opportunities as well. Organ Mountains for outdoor recreation, Fountain Theatre for alternative cinema, all kinds of theatre groups, new dorms, etc.

Daughter accepted to 13 schools in the West and has chosen the University of Idaho. I know, sounds pretty out there, but it has a lot going for it. It is on the list of the best 371 colleges 2010 Princeton Review, and counted as a great outdoor college. It has trips available to white water rafting, ski boarding, snowing, hiking, mountain biking, and surfing (in Oregon I think). It only has about 10000 students so the student to teacher ratio is very low. The professors have excellent credentials. It has a reputation as a good engineering school. It is located in the town of Moscow which hosts an annual Lionel Hampton jazz festival, a very well known event. And the university is located only 8 miles across the border from Washington State which can offer other social possibilities. The campus is beautiful, every building is within walking distance. It was designed by the same person who designed Washington D.C. The few people we have run into who have gone here have nothing but great things to say. And it is WUE. You pay only 150% of in state tuition if your grade point is 3.0, for any major. And the housing costs are very reasonable. We really couldn’t find any reason not to go. Hope it works out!

I know a young woman who went to the U. of Idaho on a tennis scholarship and absolutely loved it.

Thanks for the info!

Would Southern Utah University fit on this list?

Mesa State College in Grand Junction, Colorado. About 240 miles west of Denver, small campus. Part of WUE and M&P (Mountains & Plains) discount tuition programs. Make this a very affordable OOS. Also a neat program for those interested in Mechanical Engineering, they run a partnership program with University of Colorado @ Boulder. You will receive your BS ME-engineering degree from CU-Boulder due to this partnership. They are currently working on getting ABET accreditation as soon is allowable. Looks to be in place for the class of 2012.

After further thought I realized that I had heard of Central Washington before and I bet many of the rest of you have too: [‘Unbelievable’ sportsmanship in softball game - Other sports- nbcsports.msnbc.com](<a href=“NBC Sports - news, scores, stats, rumors, videos, and more”>NBC Sports - news, scores, stats, rumors, videos, and more)

The story still makes me cry!

I kind of have a general question about the colleges that people said do not belong on this list because their publicized GPA and test score ranges are higher than the range that we started with: Do you think that maybe girls are driving these ranges up and that in fact the ranges for the boys that are accepted may be somewhat lower than they publicize? I know I’ve read that many schools lower the required scores for boys in an effort to keep a gender balance. I’m just hoping!

Actually, it is The Evergreen State College (not University). Evergreen is very well respected public LAC.

2flipper2

I think you’re probably on to something. My son is a late blooming junior and is just now getting beyond that phase where his long-term planning extends no further than dinner time. He is now on track where his 9th/10th GPA was very low 2’s, but his 11th/12th will be 3+. I have seen the data for so many colleges where male/female ratios are 40-/60+, and that shocked me.

2flipper absolutely! I know for sure that in the case of many LACS with 40/60 m/f ratios, a young man will have a better chance at acceptance than may be indicated by the gpa ranges indicated. You are not the only parent of a boy who hopes that his Y chromasome will give him a tiny leg up ;)

Also in the event that anyone wants to double check, I am getting my data from [Free College Search | Scholarships | College Admissions Requirements](http://www.collegeboard.com).

idad, yes it is (also a CTCL) the next time I update the list I will be sure to correct my error.

This list would be awesome if each college listed were a hyperlink to the college home page.

So I guess now it is just awes . Thanks, now the list is like a flip book. Very cool.

Thanks for the list and links, historymom. You’re the best.

I’d definitely add University of Oregon to the list. It is hot, hot, hot among California kids these days. Might be a stretch for the 3.0 student, but isn’t a stretch for those closer to a 3.3.
