Western Schools for the 3.0-3.3 kid

I got the info from the web site so I do not know that answer.
My S is going to be at Linfield!

Yay for Linfield and your S! I hope he will be very happy there!!

Anyone know anything about Southern Oregon U in Ashland, OR?

My high school has sent several kids there in the last several years. All have stayed and been happy. Ashland is a fabulous town with theatre, white water rafting and skiing. Loads of cool places to shop and eat within walking distance.

I haven’t toured campus yet but it is one that S has mentioned wanting to visit as one of his good friends has a brother there.

found this: Excerted from yesterday’s LA Times

SOU is particularly well known for fine and performing arts and there are several recent press releases related to those and other noteworthy SOU happenings @ http://www.sou.edu/today.shtml

UNM Abq has open admissions for all intents.
I am wondering how test scores play into whether low GPA students are admitted to the schools people are mentioning.

E.g., when I was a kid growing up in CA, the UC system accepted in-state anybody with a GPA over a certain mark, OR an SAT over a certain mark.

A large number of these schools have entrance requirements that are very explicit. For example, Northern Arizona University says the following about out-of-state students:

Nonresident students will be offered admission if they meet the following:

* 3.0 or higher GPA* (on a 4.0 scale)
or

 • top 25 percent class rank
 • and have no deficiencies in required course requirements.

Nonresident students may be conditionally offered admission based on individual circumstances and/or space availability if they meet the following:

* 2.50-2.99 GPA* (on a 4.0 scale), or

 • top 50 percent class rank
 • and have no more than one deficiency in any two subjects in course requirements. Students with a combination math/science deficiency are not admissible. Conditionally admitted students may be required to participate in academic assistance programs.

GPA is calculated using only the 16 core courses listed under course requirements.

So you can see, right away, if you meet the cut for admission. They require the ACT or the SAT, but they don’t seem to use it for admission, at least for the “will be offered admission” category. They probably use it for placement purposes.

In University of Oregon’s case, all students (in and out of state) are guaranteed admission if they have the 16 core classes and meet a certain GPA, regardless of SAT/ACT scores. Last year the GPA required for automatic admission was 3.25. This year it is 3.4. Next year they are raising it to 3.5. But plenty of kids (up to half) will get in with lower than the 3.5, so that GPA shouldn’t scare the kids on this forum away from applying.

For U of O, the 3.5 auto-admit GPA can be the weighted GPA, if that’s the GPA printed on the transcript. I want to check to see if U of O will use the weighted GPA if both the weighted and unweighted are on the transcript.

This is a great thread. U of Montana seems like a good match for my son. Didn’t really know about this school before reading this thread. Missoula sounds like a cool college town. After reading the UOM website I have a couple of questions:

I see they have a little over 10k undergrads. How does this translate to class size? We are from CA and I see they are in WUE but it is treated like a scholarship…anyone have experience with what, in general, they are looking for in this WUE scholarship?

Of course, any other info would be greatly appreciated.

arabrab, our second applied and was accepted at NAU (above 3.0 uw) and I do believe his ACT was used for the merit scholarship he was given with his acceptance letter. He is not attending but there was alot to like about this school (as I mentioned earlier).

My DD is looking at Southern Oregon University and University of Idaho. She is interested in Stage Management and Mom is interested in WUE. We have looked at CA schools, Fullerton, Long Beach, San Diego (will not be able to get in) and think the out of state schools look great.

Would love any info on WUE schools with a good Theater Dept.

mitchwebb you are on the right track with SOU and theatre. Kids intern with the Oregon Shakespeare festival and if they hustle can acquire a lot of professional experience.

rhumbob looks like the avg class size is 18. I am sure that the lower division psych, bio and other popular classes are far larger than some of the upper division seminars and what not.

I share your enthusiasm for UM BTW great sports and rec in a great city with academics that are becoming more respected all the time. I think my S will like it too.

Slithey, UO takes whatever GPA is listed on the transcript. They’ll take the higher GPA if both unweighted and weighted are included.

Thought it was time to bump up the list. Please see page 6 for hyperlinks to the college websites. They don’t ALL copy and paste :frowning: and I do have some what of a life ;)

Karen Quest looks really interesting. I like the idea of another Once Course at a Time school, especially one a 3.0 to 3.3 kid can get into. It looked like they look at a lot more than stats for admissions.

California State University at Monterey Bay: [CSUMB ~ Homepage](http://www.csumb.edu)

I first came upon CSUMB when my daughters were beginning their college search three years ago. Though one of the youngest CSU campuses, it drew our attention as a safety because:

LAC size at a CSU price
Community involvement is a graduation requirement
its programs were integrated and very hands on
Professors like the area so left other, more well known, campuses to teach @CSUMB
They have won awards for outstanding student engagement
Very active outdoor club that takes full advantage of CA’s central coast
Enormous dorm rooms each with its own bathroom
The most residential of all CSU campuses with close to 60% of students living on campus
Access to Monterey and Santa Cruz
Fabulous brand new library

For my S all of the above plus he can dive there both as a part of the rec club and as a part of his course load.
Sports, particularly mens’ BBall (D2) are on the rise

On the downside.
The campus is not very visually appealing unless you like the central coast dunes and native plants.(which I kind of do) There is on going campus beautification as they tear down old army buildings (campus used to be a base) and continue to restore native plant species.

It lacks a well defined reputation and extensive alumni support…its 14th graduating class will be crossing the stage this year.

I think it is a hidden gem. DDs both used it as a financial and admit safety and both would have been happy to attend but they each chose a different option.

Feel free to chime in on other schools that are your favorites on this list!
