Wharton-cut throat or not?

Our son is considering applying to Wharton and we are wondering how competitive the students are with each other? We realize a certain amount of competition is healthy, but is it too much at Wharton? Can anyone speak from recent experience?

I can’t say that Wharton students are cutthroat. They are competitive and the curve in some classes makes it a very tight cutoff for who gets an A or B. However, I wouldn’t say they are cutthroat. There is no sabotage and whenever I wanted to study in groups for a Wharton course with a tough curve, I’m usually able to find a good study group. It’s not like the students there were out to get one another or anything like that.

Wharton students compete with each other, not against each other. So no it’s not very cut throat; it’s just competitive.

My dad went to Wharton for grad school (which is obviously different than undergrad), but based on what he told me, B school is all about collaboration and building teamwork skills.

^ Indeed, here’s what Wharton has to say about its undergraduate program:

There’s simply too much teamwork required to even consider the thought of sabotaging each other or anything like that. Everyone works decently hard. The problem is when teachers re-use material from last year, because there will always be groups with friends from the previous courses, and as a result, group project grades tend to be pretty darn high. What will truly make or break you are the tests.

Agree with what chrisw said. No doubt about it,your son will have to work hard and his experience at Wharton will set up a good foundation for his future endeavors, both personally and professionally.

woah… I totally just inadvertently plagiarized the wharton site haha.

I should def be a college advisor for a living.
