I always knew that Wharton was somewhat separate from the rest of the schools at Penn. However, it is still a part of Penn (obviously). It wasn't until the other day I noticed that this is only existent because Wharton makes it this way. They are the ones trying to separate themselves from the rest of the students. Yet Wharton students still take college classes. When you tell someone in the college that you are going to Wharton, they just assume that you feel that you are better than them (again, a generalization). I just wanted to post this...

P.S. I changed my location because of this. I think that most Wharton students realize this after they appear to be pompous jerks on campus but I realized this before attending Penn and wanted to share this. Some of you may have heard about this distinction but it seems irritating.

I went and bought gear that specifically said Penn and not Wharton. I think you’re overreacting. Wharton is definitely something to be proud of, and they gave us some cool stuff too.

Everybody has a slightly different opinion on this matter, and you’ll find that in 4 years at Penn the distinction is never quite settled. The Wharton dean’s office knows that the wharton brand is stronger than the Penn brand. Amy (and the rest of her office ) knows this too, but they’re trying to leverage the Wharton name to improve the Penn name.

Haha thanks. When I mentioned that I changed my location, I was kind of referring to that thread.

There’s a lot of things that go into this, but the two biggest factors are Penn’s decentralized structure (each of the 12 schools has a high level of autonomy) and selectivity. Wharton has a tougher admissions process and a better brand name as stated earlier, because it is the best at what it does.

But, at the end of the day, it’s just part of a larger university that has many fields where it is the “best” or very close to it. Making distinctions based on what school you’re in should not be a matter of someone being more qualified, but rather what you choose to study. That’s how I look at it anyway, although I will admit not everyone sees it this way.

When I was up there, I noticed a lot of kids wearing “Wharton” shirts/sweatshirts instead of just “Penn.”

Of course. It’s a pride thing I guess. I have a Wharton sweatshirt too. I also have a killer University of Pennsylvania hoodie. I really don’t see a big deal with it. I see Wharton students with “just” Penn gear on all the time. Doesn’t matter.

If nobody wore Wharton merchandise, the store in huntsman would go out of business

wait, there was a store in huntsman???
I got my Wharton tshirt (plus regular PENN sweatpants) at the regular bookstore…this was before I got the free wharton tshirt at the lunch/presentation haha

Yeah, the huntsman store has some sweaters, jackets, polos, etc. The bookstore sells mostly Penn apparel

Hah where is the store? That would have been nice to know.

Wharton kids should realize that many people in CAS and SEAS are Wharton-qualified or even better than the Wharton average. Pompously advertising Wharton status is really quite stupid when you don’t necessarily know who you’re talking to. In the end though, what with the ‘One University’ policy and all, I think Penn has done a decent job of melding the various degree programs and fostering a more interdisciplinary atmosphere.

Oh, I don’t think I’m better than other people (I saw people wearing a SEAS shirt exactly the same as the Wharton one I bought–it just said SEAS on it instead…and they both say ‘upenn…’ under).
I mean, one guy at the previews was deciding between harvard and CAS…obviously CAS people are smart.

Yeah I was just going to say what the person above me said; there are a lot of people wearing SEAS shirts etc as well. I honestly didn’t see much of this “pompous” attitude you are attributing to Wharton students.

i like my engineering shirt =)

i’ve always kinda wanted an annenberg shirt - though my only claim to it is having taken one communications course heh

whoa whoa whoa…wharton got shirts at the preview?? lol wow…

and a nice mug thing…and a flash drive in the mail today. what can I say, there is a reason the yield is so high =P

We got buttons too!

to be fair, engineering gives out a free shirt at orientation

and at e-week each year, too
