The College is NOT Wharton Jr

It angers me to hear how misinformed people are of Penn. Everything I hear is: Wharton is the only good school; you need to be a genius to get into Wharton, but the College is easy to get into; Wharton is the reason why Penn is ranked so highly; all College students wanted to go to Wharton and couldn’t get in.

I hate how little love there is for the College. While Wharton is an excellent, excellent school --and offers the best in undergraduate business education, hands down-- Penn is what it is because of ALL of its schools, starting primarily with the College of Arts and Sciences.

It is ludicrous think that Penn is only prestigious because of Wharton, and it is ignorant to think that all College students wanted originally to attend Wharton, because that is simply not the case. It can be said that the College students are, in fact, more ambitious, opting to immerse themselves in an array of fields, in order to better hone their skills in all areas of study, rather than narrow their education to strictly one discipline. This is especially true if these College students plan to attend graduate school, a route that a vast, vast majority of Wharton students do not take.

I wish the College could step out of Wharton’s shadow, because when I’m at Penn next year, I don’t want to have to deal with both outsiders asking, “You mean Penn State?” and Whartonites asking, “Only the College?” with a cocked eyebrow of skepticism.

Amen. (10 char limit filled)

I hate when you tell people that your applying to UPenn and they say "O wow Penn State, you'll have to get me game tickets."

lol that's why there are shirts that say "Not Penn State" =)

"At least you can spit in the Whartonite faces and say, "Oh just Wharton? Couldn't get into Harvard, Yale, Princeton, or Stanford?" Pssshh. You suck."...?!?!

A lot of ppl turn down HYPS to go to Wharton, and a lot of ppl turn down Wharton to go to HYPS...Psssh what? That's even more arrogant than the ppl who say Wharton is blah blah blah...it's just damn disrespectful.

Awwww...I feel sorry for myself now because I applied ED...so, no HYPS rejection letter for me, sigh...

Honestly, grow up. The whole point of this thread is to say that Wharton=College, which is saying no, in a way, to the "prestige" stereotype that always factors in when we talk about college...and you are a perfect example of the what makes the Wharton kids think they are better than the College kids...personal sense of PRESTIGE...which I disagree with, but obviously, you agree with...

everyone at penn just jokes around with each other about the whole wharton, college, nursing, engineering thing. Wharton students are the greedy *******s, nursing who?, engineering are the nerds, and the college of arts and crafts. No one actually believes this we all just kid around with each other...I don't think that my college counterparts are less intelligent than I am because I'm in wharton nor do I believe wharton is the only thing that makes penn great. Sorry to disappoint you but you're going to have to get used to the friendly jokes if you're coming to penn...

btw gutrade, the majority of the people at wharton (i believe i read 89%) had wharton as their first choice school. I know a lot that turned down HYPS, Oxford, etc. This is probably because every freaking person at wharton wants to do ibanking or consulting and anyone in these fields knows that wharton dominates all those other schools...i guess that's why Goldman Sachs employs more wharton alum than HYPS combined (i'm quoting Hank Paulson, CEO Goldman Sachs).
and don't worry i didn't get rejected anywhere...I applied ED to penn and have not regretted my decision. I sincerely hope you have a great time at your school of choice and please don't be bitter that when you graduate from HYPS, etc. you lose out on a really cushy job to a wharton grad. later.

I'd just like to note that many companies are much more impressed by an undergraduate liberal arts degree followed by a graduate business degree than they are just by an undergraduate business degree. An undergraduate business degree from Wharton is not the be all and end all of anything business related.

Wharton is still obviously the top of the top. I'm just metnioning that there are other extremely viable options (which can end up producing just as great employment opportunities) for people interested in business.

Joey

Penn sold me with the Huntsman thing and that's why I didn't apply to harvard EA

Hey Catch-22, I appreciate the sentiment but I really don't think that Wharton + College. At the very least you have to say equal but different. I think all the Wharton kids I know (and Nursing and SEAS although I don't know as many) are amazing and I have the utmost respect for what they are achieving, it's just not something that I could ever do. And they feel the same way about us College kids I guess. It's unfortunate though that there is a tendency to feel a disconnect the more advanced you get with your studies. I kind of sit around being boggled by Whartonite internship stuff and my friends just kind of glaze over if I start waxing lyrical about third order intentionality or comparative primate sexuality.
So yeah this post got sidetracked. hmm. CAS is not Wharton Jr - agreed!

I would take Wharton over any other school on the face of the planet. Guess its just what you are into?

penn in general has a "anti-intellectual atmosphere"

that came from a alum

but, I still applied to there as a match/safety

I don't like ppl dissing Penn, but i really don't care wat ppl think, i just wanna go there. There are too many ignorant ppl, we can't really silence them all. But just as long as we know Penn is the desirable school. Then who cares wat others think right?

just stick your head in the sand

penn is ok

middle of the road between USC and Brown

Wow lol.

I suggest educating yourself by reading breeze's posts: http://www.collegeconfidential.com/cgi-bin/discus/show.cgi?757/9364

Though Penn is not the best school in the world, it's definitely better than USC. That place is so creepy and isolated from the rest of town. They make it look all nice in their brochures but when we went there I felt like I should have been wearing Kevlar.

I agree, but it has good alumni connections, thats why for me at least upenn is between brown and usc. I ADORE brown

You guys should stop bashing Penn. Just because it isn't as good as HYPSMC doesn't mean it is a bad place. There are tons of schools that cannot meet the standards of those top six schools. Are they all crap too?!

Penn is a decent college on par with other good schools like Berkeley, USC, Brown, WUSTL, etc. Don't hate y'all.

that's true...there are USC alumni everywhere, esp. in AZ

I think it just depends on what type of kid you are...umm...honestly, I can't picture myself going to anywhere BUT Penn...I hate hearing kids say, "Penn's a safety/match"...more than anything, that arrogance is disturbing. A lot of people's logic goes like this: "If I have never heard of Penn, then, of course, it's not as good of a school"...And I know quite a few ppl like that, and I guess, to those kids, all I can say is "have a fun trip in fantasy land." I dunno, maybe I just suck more than the average CC'er who thinks that they are a "match/safety" type for the likes of the Ivies...
