Wharton ED, Chance me please? :)

So I was looking through my Penn Portal and finally saw that all my documents have been processed. This makes me really nervous; I mean at any point in time they could be looking at my app and judging me. Just wanted to know how much of a shot I got.

Note: I am not applying for financial aid

Nationality: Indian, Been living in Dubai for the past 15 years though

School: International school, lots of diversity (like 90 nationalities or something), we send some people to top schools. Like some people went to cornell, berkeley, etc.

System IB diploma program (it's on a scale of 1-7, where 6-7 is equivalent to an A+ according to the official IB conversion table)

Predicted grades:

Business and management HL: 7 (Topped the grade)
Biology HL: 7 (Topped the grade)
Economics HL: 7
Mathematics HL: 7

Spanish Ab Initio: 6

Rank:Top 5 %

Course load: Quite rigorous. To get the diploma only 3 HL subjects are required, but I took 4 and I got a 7 on all of them.

IGCSE: 5A*s, 3As and 1 B

Toefl: 112/120
30 R
30 L
28 W
24 S (This was because of the background noise... so many people speaking at once and we didnt get any noise cancelling speakers at my center. Oh well, doesn't matter that much I guess)

A few other things too but these are the main ones really

Recommendations

Were really good, the counselor and one teacher's were awesome (they told me), the other teacher I didn't get to talk to about my recommendation much.

Essays

Quite good, for main one I talked about how my favourite cricketer taught me the importance of dedication/perseverance and got me to start playing a sport I love. For the UPenn ones I wrote about Wharton management club, Front Row theatre company and a few others. I did the optional one too.

Let me know what you guys think, thanks in advance :D

bump, just had my interview, I think it went decent because the guy was from the region in India that I’m from and he loved cricket too.

Just got my SAT 2 scores, just as I predicted, 800 math 2 and 750 Bio - M, now what do you guys think? everything’s up to luck now I guess all parts of my app are complete

My opinion, you have a great profile, but this I would say it barely cracks the ‘average’ applicant they might get for Wharton, I would say great chance for CAS as an ED, maybe around 75% - 85% chance you’ll get in but for Wharton I would say right around the 50% range…Since you stats match pretty well, your essay + recs will hold a little more weight I presume. Again, just my opinion and good luck!

Edit: Also, International applicants have even a harder time getting, in you should keep these factors in mind. You definitely would have had a better shot if you were in the U.S obviously; there is stiff international competition when applying to Wharton especially from Asia. Again, wish you the best of luck.

thanks for ur input. Luckily, im in the middle east, and here its not so competitive, if i was in india it wouldve been much worse :stuck_out_tongue: but yea I knew Wharton was going to be hard, but its my dream school. I though about applying for Econ in CAS but then decided against it because I didn’t want to change my major for a school. Do you think I should re-write SAT 1 for a higher reading score? the max I can push my SAT is like 100 points, maybe like 50-70 in reading and 20-30 in writing

Well, UPenn won’t see your SAT score even if you do +100 pts since you ED’d. However, if you are deferred look for each point which you can get, lol. So yes, if you are deferred, retake SAT I would say. 2250+ can help a great deal.
Also, I am pretty sure all international applicants are measured under the same criterion…basically, as long as you apply from a country outside the U.S your chances are going down regardless of the number of applicants from your specific country; in essence, all the international applicants are basically viewed under the same microscope. Also, they take ethnicity into factor, so as you are Indian, it makes it tougher :frowning:

My friend had a 17.6% chance getting into UPenn using an online simulator. He then changed his ethnicity to African American and it jumped to 76%…hmm…what are the odds?
