Wharton ED

3.9 unweighted GPA in a bad high school in NJ, rank 3/630, 2220 SAT score (700 Cr, 800 M, 720 W), 770 Math 2, and 710 on Bio (unfortunately). I am an Indian male non-international. My ECs are founder and president of two non profits, over 600 hours of volunteering for a non profit on Indian culture, 2 years of Varsity tennis, Secretary of MUN, National Honor Society, tutoring kids for free and sometimes SAT tutoring around 4-6 hours a week, founder of JSA club, no hooks, my essay is about how I was actually tested for having Autism before and how I am really committed to helping those with Autism as expressed by how I have been fundraising and attending walks for years now and have actually created a non profit and that with Wharton I would want to expand my non profit. Do I have any chance of getting in or should I apply to CAS or a different school for early decision?

You have a shot, ED CAS would be safer. 3/630 is really cool.

Is the backdoor method in Wharton a good idea then?

There is no backdoor method for Wharton. They will rarely allow students to transfer from CAS to Wharton because if they did, everyone would do it. You have a shot at Wharton so apply there if that’s where you really want to go.

Should I do ED to Wharton or another school like Stern?

@patel236 - lol, whatever you do, don’t go ED Stern

isn’t stern the second best school for finance according to US news?

Please help me understand the discrepancy: your ECs scream of philanthropy (autism, volunteering, non-profits) but then you want to apply to Wharton ED? What type of business interests have you shown from your ECs?

Don’t get me wrong. Your grades and scores look great. But it looks to me like you are resume stuffing with all the humanitarian stuff. If your real interest is in business/finance at Wharton then you haven’t shown any commitment (at least based upon your ECs above).

Do you have a formal diagnosis of Autism? If so be careful with mentioning this in your essay, as your ability to communicate and interact with people will be scrutinized.

^ I disagree with you. Nonprofits are involved in the social entrepreneurship sector. I don’t think starting two nonprofits is “resume-stuffing”. The OP shows a lot of passion in solving a particular problem - that’s what successful entrepreneurship is about, and why OP stands a good chance at Wharton.

@patel236‌: You stand a great chance. Apply ED to Wharton. If that’s your interest, you might regret it later if you never even give it a shot. Good luck! We’re actually really similar as applicants. Feel free to PM me if you want more advice or want to discuss anything.

Thanks for the input. I do actually have a formal diagnosis when from when I was 6 years old. My extracurriculars are more on the philanthropic side, but I do engage in those activities by actually managing the finances of the non profits. Also, I am more interested in the Life Sciences and Management program, because this would allow me to do both a biology with concentration in neurobiology and finance degrees.

It does seem to me, however, that my interests law more towards Autism, which admissions officers might seem as strange if I don’t apply to biology. Therefore, should I still apply to Wharton or CAS, due to my interests. I do love Penn. It’s my favorite college and wouldn’t really mind going to either Wharton or CAS, as long as I actually get into Upenn. I do, however, want to work at Wall Street for a BB, especially Goldman Sachs. So Wharton or CAS?

I actually just realized something. Can I put my intended major as Healthcare management, because I think that would make my application make more sense. Would my ECs match up with that?

bump

nice nice. I say you have a decent shot. very decent. its a reach, but it is so for all. good luck

has anybody here every transfer from CAS to Wharton?

bump

What have you done in those nonprofits?

My first organization was started in June 2012 and we have spread out throughout my county and have raised approximately 10,000 dollars since June 2012 and a little under 5000 dollars alone this year. The other organization was started in December 2013, and we had a fiscal sponsorship between the two organizations and joined them together in March.

Also to add on to this my rank unfortunately 14/638

Wharton ED isn’t as selective as people think. Penn uses it to boost yield rates, so it’s actually around the 25% mark for admissions. I think you’ll get in.

I think Wharton ED is incredibly selective. There are less than 400 "Wharton only freshman entering each year - the others are dual degree - so I’m estimating that ther are about 200 Wharton freshman admitted during the ED round. If you split that for boys/girls, there are about 100 spots worldwide for each gender. Sounds pretty competitive to me!
