Wharton M&T/UChicago /Duke/Columbia/Dartmouth

Chance me at Wharton and Wharton's Jerome Fisher M&T program, UChicago, Duke, Columbia, Dartmouth, Northwestern, and Georgetown! I'm currently thinking of doing Chemical Engineering as a major, and possibly double majoring with or switching to just econ/finance, which is why I'd like to go to schools with strong programs in both of those areas.

(Link me to your thread, I'll chance you back!)
I'm currently a junior at a public charter high school that is highly ranked in the nation (Top 5).

Took the SAT I this June, got a 2230, (780 Writing, 11 Essay, 730 CR, 720 Math)
(Failed the PSAT, 75 CR. 71 Math, 56 writing!!! Probably due to a mixture of overconfidence, and the June SAT curve being slightly generous)

Planning on taking SAT II: US History, Physics, and Math II in June

Sophomore Year Course load:
AP Calc BC (5), AP World History (5), AP Biology (4), Engineering Concepts, Nanotechnology and Materials Science, Chinese 2, Honors Word Lit

Junior year Classes:
(Expecting 5s on all of my APs, maybe a 4 here or there)
AP Physics C (both Mech + E&M), APUSH, AP Gov, Georgia Tech Calculus II and III (Math 1502 and Math 2401), Chinese 3, Biochemistry/Biotechnology

Expected Senior Year Course Load:
AP Macro + Micro, AP Lang (Or maybe Lit), Differential Equations + Number Theory, Chinese 4. I'm not sure whether I should take AP Chem or take two separate classes instead (AP CS + Aerospace engineering)

So far my U/W GPA: 3.99/4.0, my school doesn't rank, but I'm in the top 10 out of a class of 210. My average is a 96.4% this semester, and it has always been drastically improving!

I've had a five week long internship at Emory's Dept. of Chemistry, where I researched 45 hours a week under a graduate student studying Quantum Dot kinetics using a femtosecond laser, and other spectroscopic techniques. I wrote a research paper on the main study I did at Emory, and made a research poster. I'm sure if I do an interview, the adcom will be very impressed by what I did there (with which I will be going to science fair).

I am planning on going back next summer (and will likely work much longer than just 5 weeks) and help with a project and get published, in JACS or Nano Letters.

For my internship during Senior year, I'm planning on working at a custom displays startup company.

ECs:

I'm in NHS, and have about 70 volunteer hours so far, most from being an assistant teacher at a language school. I'll probably end up with about 250 hours.

I also just joined Mu Alpha Theta, Engineering Honor's Society, and Beta Club this year. Hopefully I can get a leadership position in Beta Club, or EHS.

I founded my school's Stock Market club/personal finance club, for our first year we have placed 12th. For the personal finance aspect of our club, we will be teaching members, and people in our community about personal finance and the importance of managing your money properly.

I'm heavily involved in Science Olympiad, and will probably go to nationals next year, and have gotten many awards through it (so far only in invitationals and regionals)

I got first in State (with a team) at the TSA's High School TEAMS competition (9th-10th division). I'll continue TEAMS this year, this time in the (11th-12th division).
I'll also be participating in WorldQuest this year, and I have high hopes!

I'm also organizing a program across schools in my county to match up students with local businesses, to try to get them real world experience in running a business. Hopefully, what our partner businesses will be getting out of it is a younger perspective to help them market through newer channels (namely, social media). We will be partnering with our county's chamber of commerce, and the Youth About Business Program.

Also, please let me know where I can improve! Wharton is my dream school, but I'd also be very happy to get into the other schools I listed.

Thanks!

Honestly I don’t think there is much else you can improve on that is pratical. Sure you could try USABO, intel sts, etc. and doing good would be better obviously. But nonetheless, you look on track!

NW, GTown, and maybe Duke are low reaches
The rest are solid reaches.

Are you sure GTown would be a low reach? I’m worried that I may seem too focused on science for them.

wow that is pretty impressive.
Duke- match, low reach
Wharton- reach
U Chicago- maybe match low reach

rest- Ivies I guess are reach for everyone,

im not applying to any of your schools, but just from experience of my peers who applied early,
1 girl got Duke early, had around a 3.9 and 34 ACT, capt. of the cheer team, bunch of clubs, etc. idk for sure but I don’t think she had nearly as impressive stats as you

1 rejected from Wharton- kinda similar to you(3.92 or something and 33 ACT), had her own nonprofit and everything, but she way totally geared towards business, didn’t have any other activites like the impressive sci. things you have.

1 accepted to U Chicago, pretty unique in her activities.

We all go to a super competitive top notch HS as well

Amazing application, but Ivies are reaches for anyone

Wharton: Reach
Chicago: Low Reach
Duke: Low to Mid Reach

Chance my last post!

M&T - high reach
Wharton - reach
Chicago - low reach/reach
Duke - reach (they admitted over 50% of the incoming class in ED)
Columbia - reach
Dartmouth - low reach
Northwestern - high match
G’Town - high match

Thanks Dream4Life, whartondreamer, and patjeff45 (I chanced you back by the way; good luck!).

Thanks for sharing your experience Dream4Life. My school’s been rolling off the acceptances for seniors this year too. 4 in MIT, 4 in Questbridge (Uchicago, Northwestern, Ponoma, Vandy), 1 at Duke, Harvard, Dartmouth.

Harvard/Dartmouth guy is super insane, 2400 SAT first try sophomore year, went to ISEF with his project (he’s been working non-stop at Emory’s Chem dept. since his junior year), which identified the first steps to treating Whooping Cough.

You have really good stats but with elite universities admission is always a crap shoot.

Wharton: Reach
UChicago: Reach
Duke: Reach
Columbia: Reach
Dartmouth: Reach
Northwestern: Low Reach
Georgetown: Low Reach

However I’m sure you will get into at least one of these schools, probably more! Good luck

duke is the only reach
i’d say matches for the rest

Thanks everybody.
Would MIT also be a reach?

And for assumptions sake, assume I would be applying ED to all these schools when chancing me (Yes, I know you can only ED to one school).

You have a lot of great ECs and great stats, but you never know with these schools.
Wharton: Low reach
UChicago: High match
Duke: Low reach/high match
Columbia: Low reach/high match
Dartmouth: Low reach/high match
Northwestern: High match
Georgetown: Match
MIT: Low reach
Good luck! Chance back: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1590399-chance-me-top-schools-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

Really impressive stats! I believe you stand a very good chance of acceptance at Northwestern. U of Chicago is probably a low reach/high match. Duke, Columbia, and Wharton may be reaches/low reaches. Your research is a great point towards MIT; however, simply because of the nature of college admissions nowadays, I would still say MIT is a reach. They receive so many qualified science applicants each year, and I have known many outstanding students that receive rejections.

However, I think you definitely have a chance at all of these schools. Additionally, the university you attend, while important, does not matter nearly as much as what you do there. Your stats show that wherever you end up, you will be extremely successful. Enjoy high school and the admissions process, and best of luck! If you could chance me back, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks collegebound465! And yea, I’ve definitely realized that it’s not where you go, but what you do when you get there.

Pretty impressive all around. These top-tier schools are pretty unpredictable sometimes, but you are definitely competitive. You have the rest of your high school career planned out and considering you follow through, I think you’ll stand a decent chance to these schools.

You can ignore this next piece of advice, but you could probably do better on your SATs. To be taking Calc III your junior year, you’re capable to increase your math score to a 98+ percentile. Don’t get me wrong, your scores are great, but if you’re able to push a 2300, you’ll be in even better shape than you already are. Other than that, you seem to be on a great track for these schools. Good luck!!!

Yea, I know I need to brush up on math for the SAT. Been so long since algebra/geometry, so I’ve been pretty rusty on it, and haven’t bothered to practice math at all.

Will be taking the ACT in february, aiming for a 35/36 on it, I’m relatively sure I can, looking at how I’ve been doing on the practice tests.

Alright, I’ve chanced everyone back! Thanks again for your chances guys.

This is a very impressive application but upenn is a reach for everyone but you never know. Make sure to make a resume and send it to all colleges so you seen more professional

How much of a reach would HPYSM be for me (Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Stanford, MIT)?

@HalfWaterHalfAir no need to retake the SAT if your app is already this superb. Penn and Columbia are reaches for anyone, and Northwestern and Duke are low area reaches. HPYSM are massive reaches as well, but I’d say you have a great shot at all of them!

Please chance me back  http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1594388-will-transfer-better-school-help-me-get-into-my-top-schools-ea.html</a></p>

P.S. I’m a junior as well
