What is the best VOIP solution to call from UK to USA?

I'll be studying abroad in UK (I'm from USA). What is the best/cheapest/efficient/quality way to call from UK to USA? I've come across many options, but I want help in choosing the best one. I quite like Magic Jack where you have to pay $20/year. But then there's NetTalk. And Skype. And iCall (which seems like its free but I don't know how it works). And then there's Google Voice.

Please help me decide.

Thanks!

I personally like good old-fashioned calling cards. It costs me 1 cent per minute to call from the US to Germany, and I have the freedom to make calls whenever I have access to a phone. Making surprise phone calls is my favorite way to kill half an hour while I am waiting for my train.

I agree that having a calling card in your pocket is important as cell phone service in parts of the UK are sketchy. If you do not yet have a cell phone provider picked out I would take a look at the carrier “3.”

If you think you use your phone a lot here, you will use it twice as much there, and they are the best cell phone company I have ever found. They currently have an I phone plan with unlimited data, 2000 anytime minutes, 3000 minutes from 3pm-3am and 5000 text messages for only £35 a month.

Download skype and do skype to skype calls. They are free and with your unlimited data plan you can talk all day everyday.

I already have a pretty good phone. Do you think I can use that with the ‘3’ service provider? Thanks.

If you have a 3G phone that supports SIM cards, is unlocked and works with European cellular frequencies, you should be able to use a 3 SIM card in your current phone.
