What am I suppose to do?

I'm graduating from the Milwaukee School of Engineering with a B.S in Construction Management, but to my surprise, no construction companies are hiring. What exactly am i suppose to do now?

I work in general building construction and we’ve probably laid off close to 1/3 of the company in my regional office because of the lack of work. Are you looking at heavy civil construction? I have not heard as many bad things on that side.

I have looked into heavy civil work, but since I have no experience in heavy civil, and only industrial work, since companies can be real picky on who they choose to work for them, it’ll be a real struggle for me because I have no civil experience. So unless some company takes a chance with me, I’m gonna have to get lucky here real soon.

Have you tried to get a job doing heavy civil work?

How can you be surprised? In your profession you should keep track of what the construction industry is doing which would not be hard right now as it’s big news. While the need for new housing and commercial real estate will come back, it won’t be anytime soon. So experience folks from those areas are unemployed and will work cheap in the few arenas where there is work. The inventory will take years to absorb in those areas. Some markets are still in decline and will contine to be for some time.

Very good chance you’ll have to do something else for a few years.

Construction is very cyclical, but this period has been particularly bad. A few years ago, probably when you started college, the industry was doing great. Everybody was complaining how they couldn’t get enough talented people. Now, they have too many and don’t know what to do with them.

I did not try looking for heavy civil work. I graduated just before this recession when the general building construction industry was still booming. Luckily, I’m on a long-term project that won’t be done until 2012 or 2013 and by that time the industry will hopefully have recovered somewhat.

Ken285, what project are you working on and where? Must be a hospital or the like?
