Regarding the CSS Profile question " How much did you receive in grants/aid during 2011-12 academic year?" --- do I put the amount reported in Form 1098-T?

On the 1098 Form, the amount reported is $18,000 which is only half of what my child received. We actually received $36,000 for the school year (no loans). It seems that the college only reported the aid for the first semester.

My other question is --- does the FAFSA also ask the amount of grants received? I can't seem to find it anywhere on the form. Or am I totally missing it?

FAFSA only ask for taxable scholarships/grants (i.e. any scholarships/grants used to pay for unqualified education expenses such as room and board) that are included in the student’s adjusted gross income. I think it is question 43d. The question is asked so that FAFSA EFC formula can back out the scholarship income from the AGI so it does not impact the EFC.

Thanks, swimcatmom.

What about the CSS Profile question (SD110A) that is asking this:

“How much did you receive in scholarships, grants and gift aid during the 2011-12 academic year?”

It seems like a pretty straightforward question but I’m still confused as to what amount I should put.

Sorry, never did profile so can’t help there. I’m sure someone else will chime in soon.

Actually it says “how much did you or will you receive” so you put whatever the the financial aid award indicates for grants/scholarships for the 2011-2012 year.

As far as the 1098T goes, The IRS instructs institutions to report either payments received (Box 1) or amounts billed for qualified tuition and related expenses (Box 2) on the 1098-T for the calendar year. This is usually different than the school year as the second semester is usually paid out in January of the next year. In this case, I would put $36,000 on the line of CSS Profile.

Thanks, Kdog. I was thinking of putting the full amount so thank you for confirming it!
