What AP classes can I take my freshman year?

I am in 8th grade and I want to take an AP class next year. I am taking algebra 1 and accelerated science. I would prefer an AP course in one math or science. Is there a normal (taken by freshman regularly) AP class in those subjects I can take next year?

Every high school will have different options. I don’t think you’ll be able to take any AP math class yet - Calculus or Statistics usually would follow Geometry, Algebra II, and PreCalculus. AP science classes are mostly pretty challenging and are not offered to freshmen at my school. Where I live, it is common for smart ninth graders to take AP Human Geography, a class I really enjoyed.

My school only offered AP World History to freshman, which I took and got an A and a 5. Personally I would take one of the smaller APs such as AP world, AP euro, AP human geo, AP psych, or AP environmental science. Math and sciences are the harder APs so I would take honors classes in thise subjects then take the APs sophomore or junior year.

Human Geography is by far the most commonly taken AP by freshmen, followed by AP World History. But you should check with your high school’s policy, as most don’t allow freshmen to take APs (or at least only allow Human Geography).

If you want math or science, probably AP Statistics or AP Physics 1, but you’ll need to have completed Algebra 2/Trig first.

it is highly recommended that you do not take any AP science or math courses because of your math level. I think all AP math/science courses should (at the least) be taken concurrently with pre-calculus.
AP Physics(at whatever level) is managable as a freshman, but only for super-genius math students who are 4 grades above grade level and take AP Calc BC.
AP Biology does not really need much foundation or math skill, but includes heavy reading that is essential to your understanding of the subject. Unless you are very strong in the humanities (or bio itself) and are prepared to work VERY hard or have a killer memory, you should not take it as a freshman.

most freshman that take an AP take a social studies class (as noted by the posts above. It’s best to take AP world or APUSH because they are challenging courses that can give you a taste of AP hell, but if your school offers on AP Human Geo or AP NSL, it is still a very good experience to take those classes.

AP Human Geography, AP Psychology, and MAYBE AP US Gov or AP World Hist could be freshman courses. Once you get into your sophomore year, I would recommend AP Physics 1, AP Stats, AP Bio, AP Chem, AP Calc, AP Euro Hist, APUSH, AP Enviro, or AP Comp Sci. For your Junior and Senior years, go crazy with whatever is available. Remember to relate what you take with what you are interested in and what you plan your major in college to be.
