What AP Summer Work Do You Have To Do?

I’m taking AP English Lit.

Work: I have to read Hamlet, Pride and Prejudice and A Doll’s House.

Hamlet and A Doll’s House are plays, and I’m familiar with both. Especially Hamlet. Not too difficult. I just started Pride and Prejudice yesterday and I’m finding it hard to sit through. Maybe it’s just because I’m not a sucker for romantic subplots, but it’s so boring.

Besides the reading, I have to answer questions and do journal entries for each book. Three entries for each chapter/scene (this will kill me on Pride and Prejudice).

I’m taking:

AP Calculus AB/BC
AP Physics B
AP Psychology
AP English Lang
AP Computer Science (online)

I just have to read Catcher in the Rye and keep a response log for Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass for AP English Lang

Thank goodness I do not have to write any papers/essays for summer work! My essay writing is reserved for college apps this summer :)

I only have two APs left at my school, each with only moderately lengthy reading assignments, nothing crazy.

A school-month’s worth of Calc BC (chapters 1 and 2), three not well known books for AP Eng Lit, AP Spanish Lang reading, JHU CTY 3 month pre calc, and a huge book for a religion class :(

I’m surprised how many people only have summer work for English classes

AP Chem - read first three chapters of PR. Do multiple choice and essays at end of chapter.

AP Calc - 127 question packet but it’s super easy, I almost finished before school even ended.

AP Lit - choose a novel from a list to read. Write a 3 - 5 page paper describing how the author’s use of literary devices enhance the novel

Choose between the plays Doubt and Equus, we will be given an assignment the first week of school.

Choose a poem from a list and write a poem of your own mimicking it’s tone, literary devices, etc.

Choose 4 more poems from the list and write a one page journal entry about them

I am taking 3 APs next year: econ, psych, and BC Calc. The hardest one, Calc, is not assigning any homework. I am also taking Honors English, which is similar to the AP Lit class except that there are fewer timed writings in class, but the same amount of summer and class work.

Econ: Read Freakonomics. (hence the name)
Read first 2 chapters of textbook.
Read Ariely introduction to Pridictably Irrational.
Finish a packet.
Prepare for a debate.
Study for 2 quizzes.
Psych: Read Phantoms in the Brain and take 1-3 pages of notes per chapter.
English: Read The Things They Carried
2 of 4 “Thesis” books (which are for a long 15 page essay to be turned in at the end of the year), with thorough annotations.

PHEW! That was long just typing it! I am still working on starting some of these, and they are to be turned in less than 60 days. I am a procrastinator, yes, but most of you guys have it easy! I can’t even imagine what others taking more APs in my school are dealing with. YIKES!

@futurefreakon - just throwing this out there, freakonomics is an awesome book if you haven’t read it yet, the authors are genius and it really is enjoyable to read

AP English Lang/Comp:
Read Heir to the Glimmering World by Cynthia Ozick, read/annotate a couple reviews from a website. Also read Mississippi: An American Journey by Anthony Walton and respond to reading questions.

AP US History:
Read Confederates in the Attic by Tony Horwitz.

AP Probability and Statistics: None

AP Econ: Outline the text

AP US Government: Outline the text and do some FRQ’s

For AP European History I have to memorize all the countries locations, their capitals, land features, and bodies of water in Europe.

Although it isn’t AP, I have to read the Count of Monte Cristo for Pre-AP English II and do a report and powerpoint over it.

AP Psych-Read 6 case studies and summarize them each in a page
AP Lit-None
AP Spanish-Read 2 articles and summarize each, workbook stuff (a few dozen pages of excerpts and 100 or so questions), and listen to audio on some site and answer questions
AP Macro-Read Freakonomics and write a 2-3 page stream of consciousness

AP Bio- Read 10 chapter from the textbook (Biochemistry and Ecology), complete a study guide and vocab cards for each chapter, and complete a test (35 mc and 1-2 short response) for each chapter.
AP Psych- Read 8 chapters of The man who mistook his wife for a hat and write a 2 paragraph summary of each chapter.
AP English Lang- Read Fast Food Nation and The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass and complete a “Key Moment” chart for each book.
APUSH- Read 4 chapters of American Colonies, answer 10-15 questions per chapter, and define about 20 terms per chapter.

AP English Lit- Read Poisonwood Bible- keep detailed reading log

Read How to Read Literature Like a Professor- detailed reading log and corresponding questions for each of the 27 chapters

Those are both due the first day.

Brave New World with a reading log is due two weeks after school starts

and Slaughterhouse Five and its assignment and reading log, is due a month after school starts

AP Calc AB- None

AP Gov- Read Hardball by Chris Matthews.

With a book for the National English Honor Society as well, it’s a lot of reading to say the least. :P

AP Stat - worksheet (done)

AP Lang - read To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, take notes; test on first day of class

AP Calc - worksheet (done); test on first day of class

AP Euro - read first 5 chapters from textbook (done)

AP Bio - read first 6 chapters from textbook; test on first day of class

AP Micro - read first chapter from textbook; test on first day of class

Love my life :(

AP English Composition- None

AP Calc AB- None

APUSH- Read Uncle Tom’s Cabin, The Jungle and Founding Brothers and write five logs on each of them. Read either an essay by John Locke or James Madison on government and write an analytical essay.

AP Chem- None, this is the first year my school has ever offered this course. I’m not even sure if there is a teacher yet…

I am currently freaking out right now. School starts next Friday for me (the 22nd).

I finished my AP Gov work (outline the Constitution and the Articles of Confederation, make 150 notecards on given terms).

But I still have to do most of AP Lang: one more essay, analyze 10 quotes, 4-6 page paper on Frankenstein and put it all together in a portfolio.

Then, on top of that, I now have to outline like 10 chapters for AP Environmental Science, even though I asked to drop that class at the very beginning of the summer (I requested Honors Anatomy and Physiology instead.) But apparently the way the schedule works out, I can’t take Anatomy so I’m stuck in the AP class that is literally a joke.

I shouldn’t have procrastinated so long, but I think recovering from a major surgery is a pretty good excuse, right? Hahaha if only my teachers would accept that.

ap lit: read the crossing and king lear and do a SOAP on each
ap gov: read a brilliant solution and answer questions
ap physics: chapter 1 review

AP Calc AB - Summer Math assignments (2 packets, 8 pages each)
AP Lit/Comp - 5 books to read with an essay on each + a shirt with a quote on it…so dumb @_@

I’ve already graduated but I wanted to see what you all did for English.

Some of the stuff you all listed for Lit/Lang made me laugh. We had to read 5 novels and a play and write 3 page papers on each. We also had to keep detailed reading logs - 1 page of discussion over EACH CHAPTER in every book. Yeah, I think I’m pretty much the winner on this thread as far as English goes :)

The same teacher does AP Lit and AP Lang at my school so I did the same assignment (with different books) both summers. Surprisingly, it was a pretty cool class. Oh the things we do for 5s.

For AP World History I just have to do a book report :P. My school doesn’t even give any of the logistic AP classes summer assignments except for AP Statistics, AP Macroeconomics, and AP Microeconomics.
