What are Cornellians like?

I'm just in the process of searching for schools and finding out which suits me best. Just out of curiosity:

1) Is there a lot of competition between students?
2) Any suicides?
3) Is it really cold during the winter? + How long is the winter break?
4) What's your experience of Cornell?

Thanks!

Just another question... How hard is it for an international student, wishing to major in Architecture, to get into Cornell?

1) Yes
2) Cornell suicide rate is below the national average.
3) Yes but nothing really different from other schools in the northeast.

1) Is there a lot of competition between students?
A: Yes, but not cut-throat.

2) Any suicides?
A: No suicides in the last two years. Cornell gets bad rep for that because some local people would jump off the bridge on campus.

3) Is it really cold during the winter? + How long is the winter break?
A: It's cold in the winter, but it's just like most of the North East + more snow. The winter break is 1 month long.

4) What's your experience of Cornell?
A: I have good experience at Cornell. I really enjoy the people I met. Since I am not a big party type, I don't really like some of the frat kids. But, most of the frat kids I met are actually quite nice.

Yes, competitive ambitious students just like at any top school, but they are very supportive, no lighting each other on fire and stealing notes.

Suicide rate lower than national average.

It's cold, but the climate is similar to the rest of the northeast. Theres also skiing like 30 minutes from campus. Winter break is 5 weeks long (12/17-1/24 this year).

It's gorgeous, and the people I've met are really cool, intelligent kids.

The whole cut throat suicide rap is basically an urban legend...

Go Visit!... you'll see ample fun going on... but after all it is a top university, so yes there are people studying... but at 40k+, if you're looking for only fun.... summer camp is a lot cheaper....

Cornellians are awesome

After 1 1/2 years of actute observation, I've discovered that Cornellians are like people. They do like to have fun (really!). Their senses have not been dulled by the harsh Ithacan winters. They do not have an infinite reservoir for alcohol. Occasionally, I even find one who does not drink alcohol at all. (imagine that!) And they do not have any special propensity for jumping into caverns, wells, or gorges.

The real question is, what arent cornell students like! I mean seriously, how can you even try to stereotype a student body made up of people from dozens of countries and all 50 states, of many ethnicities, religions, social and financial backgrounds, with different interests and hobbies, spead across more than 70 majors in 7 colleges?

thats a d*^@ good point...

then... what arent cornellians like? lol. i hear all these scary stuff about how they study 24/7, esp those students majoring engineering and architecture. and i surely dont want to go to a school with students that have no life... though it seems like that isnt the case.

a question for ec: you say you're not a party-type, has that hindered your experience? i'm just curious because i'm the same way. thanks.

I'm also not the party type, Collegeboung1987, so I'm curious as well...

I think most cornell students like to party. However, i dont know if not being the partying type will hinder your experience per say. There's plenty else to do, its just that a lot of people (i.e. those who party, never go looking for it).

thanks perro. so you don't think that should be a factor in deciding for or against cornell?

No i wouldnt think so at all. Even if you arent the partying type in the least, you will still keep busy and have a great time. But, also, it really wont kill you to get out and see other people now and then. Even if you dont drink I would recommend going to parties at least once in a while.

thanks perro. it's not that i'm stiff, i just don't want to feel overwhelmed by a culture that isn't mine. but yours and other posts have quelled those fears, i think, so thanks a lot. i'm pretty sure i'm going to Cornell and really excited.

what are cornellians like?.......SEXY!

Oh yeah, i forgot to mention that sparticus...

its 3nd most important thing on your app. right after GPA and SAT...peer eval. of sexiness...don't you remember?
