<p>So I heard that they are like clubs, but not really. Can anyone explain to me and everyone else their functions? :)</p>
<p>I’m in a fraternity. There’s really not much to compare it to. It basically fills the function of a “family” at a college.</p>
<p>Here’s my summary of how it works:</p>
<ul>
<li>Bunch of college people form very close bonds of friendship (called brotherhood)</li>
<li>Naturally, such close friends will share a living space if possible</li>
<li>You “rush” to check out fraternities, they bid you if they like you, and if you accept the bid, you pledge, and if you’re found to be a good fit, you get initiated</li>
<li>As with any closely-bonded group of college kids, parties happen</li>
</ul>

<p>I’ve never been in one but as far as I can see, it’s a group of people are very close to each other. Similar interests and whatnot. You guys are basically a family and are expected to back each other up. You have to prove you can be in the “family”. By being part of the family, you take part in their activities, and fulfill their expectations.</p>
<p>There are also different kinds of fraternities and sororities. Many are social, some are multicultural, and some are professional.</p>
<p>How do you find them in colleges?</p>
<p>Most universities have things like “Meet the Greeks” and whatnot at the start of the semester. If your uni has a club fair then you often see the professional greek organizations (business-oriented, health profession-oriented, etc) there as well.</p>
<p>I recommend watching some films like “Revenge of the Nerds” or “Animal House” to get a good idea of how to behave when rushing a fraternity.</p>

<p>So that probably couldn’t be any further from the truth. Any hollywood portrayal of greek life is gonna be pretty unrealistic. You’ll hear about rush when you get to school.</p>
<p>If he’s asking what’s a fraternity/sorority, movies like “Revenge of the Nerds” or “Animal House” will probably get him to rush some that he’s not comfortable with. It takes a very certain type of person to be comfortable with that level of debauchery.</p>

<p>I’ll be blunt: where I am, at least, it’s no longer funny. You can joke about hazing, stereotypes, etc., and people will think you’re 100% serious. </p>
<p>I’d personally love to be able to laugh at the humor, but the situation is just so bad I find it nearly impossible.</p>

<p>I also have not seen anything like this there may be it was just movies who is giving a new picture of college campus to people. I think govt. should make action may be there are some place who gone wild in night or day, it doesn’t matter for them. They are there for enjoyment and that’s what they do.</p>
