What Are Hooks?

1) Does it apply to every college?

2) How much of a difference does it make?

3) What are all the hooks possible?

Hooks are you “ace in the hole” so to speak. Hooks are things that help influence colleges to select you more. While on their own, they’re helpful and may even tip you over the edge if you are in “limbo” for a college’s decision, They won’t get you into a school alone though. Some examples might include:

Recruited Athlete
Exceptional Grades/Rank
Exceptional Standardized Test Scores
Extreme passion in certain field of study
First Generation College Education
Legacy
Socio-Economic Background
Under Represented Minority
Geographical Diversity

^Yep, I agree with that mostly. “Hooks” are just special things that make you stand out basically.

As commonly used there are 3 hooks: URM, recruited athletes, legacy.

and developmental cases. Besides those 4, everything else is only a tip

What does it mean by legacy?

A legacy is someone who has had a close relative attend a previous school. For example, if one of your parents attended, say, Vanderbilt, then that makes you a legacy to Vanderbilt, helping your chances of getting in.
