what are important factors for selection at cmu?

more specifically... cit?

-how important are the essays, recs, ec's compared to sat/gpa?

Well, cmu isn't a very verbal place like Amherst for example, so the common app essay probably isn't their top concern. However, the supplemental essay is probably important, because Carnegie Mellon unlike other schools have a student body that knows what they want to study--and the ability to convey your interest and your future goals in terms of pursuing your interest is in my opinion very important. I read somewhere that Michael Steidel, the head of admissions at CMU said that the high school transcript was the most important factor of admissions..which obviously makes sense. CMU specifically said in an info session that they don't really look at what went on freshmen year. Also, they like students that are solid performers, strong grades throughout their entire high school career, although sometimes people that make huge improvements are seen as attractive candidates also. SAT's are also really important, and should be on par with your gpa. A huge discrepancy will probably raise eyebrows.
