just how selective is carnegie mellon?

gpa: 3.44 (UW)
SAT: 2150

-decent ECs
-i do a lot of art extra curricular.

????
thanks :)

This year they seemed to be very very concerned with their yield rates. I know many superb applicants that got waitlisted while very sub-par applicants were accepted. I personally thought I was borderline for acceptance and I got in with an 8k merit scholarship. You never know whats gonna happen.

Try to demonstrate a lot of interest. I visited, wrote a great essay about the pittsburgh penguins, etc. I was probably borderline (31 ACT twice, 34 Superscore) valedictorian, decent sat II’s, average ec’s (except i was a ranked athlete ~not playing at cmu).

So just visit, try to soak it all in, and start thinking about Why Cmu

I think it varies depending on what college within CMU you apply to (the average stats—SATs, GPA, &c—are quite different for the School of Computer Science versus Humanities & Social Sciences).

Besides grades, show INTEREST. Visit, ask for an interview (though they aren’t necessary), send your application on time, spend time on your essay and keep reiterating why CMU is for you and how you can contribute to the school.

An admissions officer I spoke to before I applied last summer said that one of the most important things is to be specific and keep “plugging” in your essay why you+CMU= harmony. Say who you talked to, what buildings you liked, talk about Pittsburgh, blah blah.

I got in (thank god) for CIT and I think my essay really helped me. And the fact that they don’t count freshman grades, REALLY saved me.
