What are my chances anywhere?

Hey Guys,

This is my first post here. My college application will be a bit scattered because I am strong in some areas but weak in others. My goal is to get into Finance, particularly Wall Street, so these are the schools I have really shortlisted as my top choices : NYU Stern, UC Berkeley, Harvard, UPenn Wharton, Boston University, Carnegie Mellon, UCLA, USC, UCSB, University of San Francisco. I obviously am aiming high and I know I do not have a very good shot at the better schools in that list, but I wanted your opinions. Here are my stats :

GPA (Cumulative) : 3.82 (but probably going to be a 3.8 after semester) UW and ~4.1ish W. I go to a very competitive high school so I am in the top 30% there (not trying to rant or get sympathy, just providing some insight)

SAT : 2210 (800 M, 760 W, 650 R)

SAT II : Planning on taking Math II and Physics. Don’t know about Physics, but expecting a 730+ on Math (going for 800)

Course rigor :
I have taken Honors Math every year. I am currently in AP Physics 1, AP Statistics, and AP Computer Science. Planning on taking AP Physics C, AP Econ, AP BC Calc, and AP Spanish next year. I took a computer science class every year because it is definitely a good skill to have.

Extra Curriculars (What I believe to be my strong point) :
DECA - I started this year (Junior Year) and plan on continuing through next year

Unnamed club - Club (which I can’t give out the name without giving away my school) that partners with local non-profits and small businesses and allows the students to help the owners/managers to improve their business. I helped a small business grow in terms of social media presence, and community presence.

Civil Air Patrol - Volunteer organization part of the United States Air Force. Conducts over 90% of all Search and Rescue within the domestic United States. I joined in 7th grade after my mom was diagnosed with a potentially life-ending disease (She’s fine now, knock on wood  ) and it helped me get out of a dark place. I rose through the ranks and now am the Cadet Commander of my Squadron and in the top 15% of Cadets worldwide (in terms of rank). Joined because of my passion for aviation. Learned a lot about leadership through this program.

Student Pilot - I’ve always loved planes. I taught myself how to fly a plane using a simulator at the age of 9. I first piloted an aircraft at 11 and have been learning and loving the hobby ever since. Because I started so young I find it easier to fly than to drive!

Baseball - Two years on JV and one on Varsity. Won Most Improved Player Sophomore Year and Coaches award Junior Year. Really love the sport. Definitely allowed me to learn alot about myself and my ability to improve.

Jobs : I will be working in the Finance/Accounting department of a very major company this summer. It is a paid internship that was previously only offered to College Students.

Again, I know my chances aren’t superb because of my low GPA and average SAT scores at the schools I told you about, but please do let me know what you think. If you think there are some schools that could be a good fit for me but I didn’t mention in the list, please let me know. I appreciate any feedback!

Oh and I forgot to mention, all of the ‘B’ grades I received in my high school career were either in particularly challenging classes (Computer Science, Honors Math, and other APs)

I think you have great extracurriculars, try increasing sat and you should have a solid chance.

Hey I appreciate it man! When you say SAT do you mean my normal SAT score or the SAT II?

.

I think you have a very interesting and unique application, if you can write killer essays, perhaps about your transformative experience in the Air Force program or about your passion for flying you should have a good chance of getting in. Another school I would also consider applying to if you’re looking to get into finance and Wall Street, is Columbia, shameless plug, as the proximity to the physical location of Wall Street gives you countless opportunities!

I think if you can aim for a 750+ on both of your SAT subject tests, you’ll have a good chance of getting in.

Good luck!

Thank you ivybound24! I really do appreciate the feedback. I’m definitely hoping to grind out on my essays this summer and get some good scores on the SATIIs. I actually toured Columbia over the summer and I liked it, but wasn’t a hundred percent sure if it was a good fit for me, but I’ll definitely look into it.

Congratulations by the way!

If you want to go into finance at some of these schools you need 800 on Math II

Yeah I am aiming for an 800. I think I have a good shot because the math lane I am in basically covers the whole SAT II math, but we’ll see. Thank you!

Hello everyone once again. Just came with an update. Scored 750 on my SAT II Physics and an SAT I in math. Happy about math and also happy about physics given that I only had one week to learn and study the AP Physics 2 material, however wanted to hear if you guys thought 750 would be a good score.

Personally I am confident in my SAT I and II scores and I feel like they should push me there. Are my chances looking better because of these?

Apologies, scores were :

750 SAT II PHysics
800 SAT II Math 2

UC GPA? https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/

Are you in-state for California UC’s? Do you have any cost constraints? UC’s will cost you $55K/year as an OOS student with no financial aid. Your test scores are excellent along with your EC’s which should really help your chances, but not sure it will be enough for the UC’s which are very GPA focused. You definitely have a shot if these schools are affordable.

Good Luck.

Hi Gumbymom! Thanks for the kind words! My UC GPA using that calculator appears to be 4.11. I am a bit confused to what you are saying about the costs. I live in California and was not thinking about the costs. Will a college favor someone who can afford college vs not?

Thanks again!

I was looking at the your college list and was not sure if you were in-state or OOS. California UC’s no longer offer financial aid to out of state students, so that is why I asked. I would still check with your parents on how much they are willing to pay or can pay, but as a California resident, the UC’s can be generous with financial aid if you qualify.

The UC’s are not “need aware” but do accept many OOS students since they pay higher tuition.

Oh, I understand. Yes I am from California. That makes sense, I’ll check.

Just an update again. Considering ED1 at NYU Stern and also considering ED1 Cornell and ED2 Stern. Do you think I have a shot at NYU Stern for ED1?

^^ sorry again lol. Could you guys also chance me for Wharton ED1?
