what are my chances as an out of state applicant?

I'm a junior at an international school in Tokyo and I want to visit UMich this summer, but with airfare being expensive and all, I want to make sure that I'm not wasting my time and that I at least have somewhat of a shot at getting in.

Stats
GPA: 3.49 (weighted) (I know this is really low, but my grades have been improving in an upward trend. freshman: 3.02, sophomore: 3.55, junior: 3.86. I had a really rough Freshman year)

AP Classes this year (at my school you can only take them starting Junior year): US History, English Language and Composition, Macroeconomics. I also self-studied for Microecnomics and Japanese.
Next year I'm taking: European History, Environmental Science, Statistics, and French.

ACT Composite Score: 34
(English: 32, Math: 34, Reading: 33, Science: 35, Combined English/Writing: 29)

Extracurriculars:
-varsity swim team all 3 years so far and captain this year
-club called abot kamay all 3 years where i went to Thailand for a service trip
-community service with an organization called Hands on Tokyo
-worked for the past 2 summers as a camp counselor at a summer camp hosted by my school

The unweighted GPA is more relevant than the weighted GPA. If the GPA increase in junior year is because of the weighting from AP classes then I would think Michigan would still be a reach. It may be a slight reach in any event.

I think it is a reach for you. Also it is over $50,000/year, can your family afford it?

I think UM is a big reach considering he is an international student and UM only has 5% of internationals in its incoming freshman class. What is your class rank and your unweighted GPA. Your test score is very good and your EC’s are solid. I would apply, but it might be a waste. Also it depends on which college you are applying to. Albeit Engineering and LSA are becoming increasingly more selective now that UM switched to the common app. I would still apply anyway. You never know what will happen.

I only took 3 AP classes this year, so it doesn’t make that big of a difference in my GPA. It’s still in the 3.4 range. Money isn’t an issue with my family.

I don’t know what my class rank is, and I’m probably going to apply to LSA…

Is it really THAT big of a reach?

He meant your upward trend (the 3.86 Jr year) is mostly do to the weighted nature of the AP classes.

Maybe if you were IS you could have a chance, but international man? I’m just not seeing it. You would need some crazy big hook to make up for the GPA. And your ECs, ACT, and upward trend ain’t it

Ooh. My Junior year unweighted is a 3.6

I’m also not an international student, I have American citizenship. I just live in Japan right now because of my father’s job.

Oh, well that helps. But your GPA is still pretty low.

OOS isn’t IS, but its better than international.
