Right now I have a 3.77 cumulative GPA in 10th grade, and I want to become the valedictorian of the class of 2012 at my school, however, I was wondering if it is possible to raise my GPA high enough to contend with the people who have 4.0s in my grade by taking several AP classes and working hard in the next two years, or am I just wasting my time with this goal? I am taking AP bio and Ap euro next year with several honors classes. And in 12th grade I was planning to take AP calc AB, Ap macro, Ap physics NM, AP enviromental science, and AP comp gov/ or AP spanish. If i can average around a 4.3-4.5 the next two years I calculated I will be in the 3.9-4.1 range which would allow me to graduate magna cum laude or summa cum laude, but I am not sure it will be enough.

Becoming valedictorian would mean you’re the very top in your class, meaning you would have to take MORE APs than the current top of your class. It all depends on what they are taking and how much harder your schedule is than their is.

Gotta load up on those AP courses… I’m a rising senior and am currently no. 1, but I must say that it took a ton of effort to get where I am…

You have to make sure that the disparity is <0.05 GPA points (I’m assuming this is a five scale) in order for you to snatch the spot; just keep working hard–people slack off and/or get tired jr. and sr. year…

what cubecal said is correct. If the current top students are planning on taking APs, then it will be much harder for you to contend with their gpas. They are currently sitting in a higher gpa range, so you will have to do considerably more AP/honors courses so that you can raise your gpa high enough to surpass them.

Regardless, you should still aim to raise your rank.Even if you don’t graduate as the val, you could still find yourself in a very respectable rank. Good luck!!

thanks, If i can make it into the top 5% of my class that should be good enough with a high enough SAT score which I will get because I am taking Kaplan SAT prep which helped my friend increase her SAT score by 500 points, so I think I should earn around a 2000-2200.

Yeah I think they are going to take around the same # as I am. right now I think I am around top 25 in a class of about 300, so I need to step it up in order for me to even think about going to a college off my dreams like Upenn or johns hopkins

Don’t forget extracurriculars…

I play basketball for my school, I also volunteer at the local YMCA, ive played piano for 7 years

Ever heard the saying “shoot for the moon; if you fail, you’ll fall among the stars”? Try as hard as you can to get valedictorian without going crazy/losing enjoyment in life. If you don’t succeed, you’ll still have killer improvement and a wider selection of colleges to choose from.

I was wondering how I can change my study habits and learning processes to become “smarter”? Im probably not going to be valedictorian because I just learned today some typical asian kid in my chemistry class took AP stat in 9th grade! now he’s taking AP calc AB and AP physics.

Well, not stereotyping would be a start.
