What are my chances at Fordham with a 1.8 GPA?

Brace yourselves... What you're about to see may shock you.

GPA: 1.8
ACT: 17 (taking SAT next month)
I was selected as a Your Choice Applicant, for whatever reason, so that slightly increases my chances of admission. The Your Choice Application is a streamlined application for students that Fordham is interested in. Does anyone else know about this?

African-American/Asian/Native American mix
Female
A state very far from NY

EC's:

Varsity Debate team: 10th, 11th, 12th
Mock Trial Atttorney: 10th, 11th, 12th
Academic Decathlon Captain: 11th, 12th
DECA: VP, 11th, President, 12th
... and a whole bunch of other stuff I don't feel like typing out right now. Several leadership positions. Most of my clubs are academic, Several awards (local and state level), TONS of community service.

Excellent essay explaining my grades (homelessness, father's death, etc.). It was edited by my English teacher.

Superb letter of recommendation from my Adv. English teacher. It speaks very highly of me.

Given that I was chosen as a Your Choice applicant, and they sent me emails almost every week urging me to apply, saying "I think you'd be a great fit here at Fordham," "I am looking forward to hearing from you especially," "I'm very interested in seeing your application," etc. along with waving my application fee.. What do you think my chances are?

To begin with, I never even planned on applying to Fordham (even though it's always been my #1 choice) because of how low my grades are, but when they sent me that email and letter in the mail I became ecstatic! In fact, nearly in tears. It's a dream come true. Does the Your Choice application mean I'm in? That means they want ME, right?

I already sent my application. I called earlier today and they said it should be in the mail any day now... I won't be getting any sleep tonight :p

Thanks for the help!

BUMP. Why won’t anyone reply to my thread?? :(

Maybe…
with a 1.8…anything is hard, but you might be some sympathy for losing your father and having been homeless.

Thanks so much!! I really hope so =) It would be literally a dream come true! Ahhhh… The anticipation, haha. After all I’ve been through these past four years, this would be the PREFECT ending.

Anyone else? Please let me know what you think…

I think the lack of response is that no one knows what to make of your case. You’re in the bottom 1% of both GPA and ACT scores, but you apparently have a touching story, great EC’s and you’re a URM. I mean do the EC’s and the essay overcome the scores? Only Fordham can really answer that. Either way, good luck!

Thanks to the guy above me!..

Gosh I really hope I get in. My mom only had enough money for me to apply to one other school (Pace University), so if I don’t get in, Pace will be my only shot… I feel like my life is on the line right now. :O

To be honest, I don’t think you have a decent chance. As a previous poster said, yur GPA would put you in the bottom 1%, a slot reserved for truly exceptional admissions cases; your ACT is also significantly below the 25th percentile at Fordham. I would not get your hopes up.

If I were in your situation, I would consider more a feasible option, perhaps first attending a community/junior college, which may serve a better transition for you going forward than immediately going to a 4-year college.

But by would they choose me for the Your Choice application?

I looked into the Your Choice… apparently lots of people have gotten them with no idea why. It also does not help your chances drastically, according to what I have read. You may have a chance, but don’t get your hopes up.

Not really sure, but I would like to suggest. This is a suggestion however, but I think it may be better if you enroll in a community college wherever Fordham may be. There you could start over, perhaps get a GPA in the 3 - 3.5 range and transfer to Fordham, or other 4 yr institution.

Best of luck, I hope you get in.

thanks for the chance! I can’t say i know much about fordham (concerning grades/sat/act scores) however like you said, you too are a unique applicant. It’s hard for me to say whether or not you will get into that specific school, but i do believe you have a lot of potential. Even if you don’t get accepted into your dream school, it’s not the end of the line. There’s always grad school and opportunities to transfer. Keep your head up and i’m sure you’ll be fine.

Thanks for the help and support everyone!! I truly appreciate it…

Anyone else?

i think given your circumstances you might have a shot. go visit the school if you can, try and get an interview done because that will help them better understand you and from where you are coming from. But i do have to say, fordham is a very hollisitic school, meaning they go my numbers mostly. But im not gonna say you dont have a chance, but the chances are against you.

Thanks. I really hope I got in…

somegirl…the good news is that even if you do not get in right now you can go to community college for two years and then apply! keep up the work and good things will come :)

Thanks, but I really don’t want to go to a community college…

Community College is better than no college. Everyone has to start somewhere, although in your circumstances it may seem unfair. Think of it this way - if you maintain a solid GPA in community college, and write in your application that you came back from being homeless on the streets to finishing two years of community college with a 3.4, they will see dedication and it will definitely improve your chances of getting into Fordham.

I’m still counting on Fordham, but if I don’t get in, what do you guys think my chances are at Pace University?

Bump…

SomeGirl, instead of asking for the opinions of skewed and likely misinformed CC posters, use the data available to make inferences about what sort of a chance you have at making a school.

According to Pace’s data on Collegeboard.com , there are no students with a GPA below 2 and your ACT score is 3 points below the 25th ACT percentile there. I would not expect an offer of admission from Pace.

I understand that this “Your Choice” thing is exciting. But please, do not have unreasonable expectations for where you can get into college.
