What are my chances at Harvard/how to improve them

Aren't there remarkable things you can do at home, too? Such as this company. Might be better to drop a couple of the ECS you don't like (maybe that classical music) and focus more on the rest of your life.

Yeah, there are other things I can do, but I really like classical music(I just have no talent at playing it :(). About the studying abroad, I really would like to do this. I've probably been looking forward to this since 9th grade, but this cost is really prohibitive, which is why I'm reconsidering.

Maybe you could teach English online. Anyway, if your social life is getting crimped, you really should drop something.

About your classical music--if you really like it a lot, you may not necessarily have to win a lot of awards in it. Bring it up in your essays, write very well about why you like it--just show you have passion. I'm a terrible chess player, I lose almost every game I play, but I still wrote about it for one of my Stanford essays, because it was something I enjoyed and spent a lot of time on. No way in hell was I ever going to receive any distinctions (unless they were for being bad) but I made it extremely clear that I loved the game. Showing true passion will make you stand out as much as winning recognition will, I think.

How would I go about teaching English online? There aren't many places that offer that :). Its still going to be a pretty big stretch, I'm probably missing a good 10k for this (assuming they give me $10,000 financial aid) :/. I guess I will write about classical music in my essays, I'm just average at it, but I really like it heh.

You should really PM me the URL of the hosting company because my hosting just ran out at one of my domains =( Anyways, I just was wondering what kind of servers you are running and how many servers?

At the moment I'm running over 110 servers, a mix of Pentium 3/Celerons with 40-80GB of hd space and several dual xeons with anywhere from 100GB - 200GB of space on each. Thats about it. I have a custom load balancing solution with Zeus load balancers to shift the load as necessary. I'd PM you the url if it could really help you but, the amount of space and bandwidth I offer is rather minimal :), you would do better with 0catch.com or something similar.

That said, I could probably sell off all this hardware on ebay and make a bundle for my tuition, but a good percent of it is leased :).

Btw, what do you guys think my chances at Wharton would be, if I were to decide to apply?

My math scores are relatively high(though not USAMO level), Math has always been my strong point, I got a near perfect on the math section of the PSATs this year. I expect to make a perfect next year.

Anyone?

Someone be blunt lol. I'm really serious about this, I find so many ego-boosters in this thread, but I'm really serious about evaluating my chances and how to improve them. I would like to know everyone's opinions on this even if its, "You're going to fail in life, loser."

I think some people have already given a lot of good, solid suggestions.

You're a soph. Take time to find what you like, and really develop in that area. Honestly, there really isn't anything that irks me more then a person doing every single thing just for college.

Your stats are okay. I go to a very academic school and many students have a profile like that early on, many enter in frosh year going into honor sciences plus APUSH and are in AP sciences their soph. year, and still making a 4.0.

I'm not saying "you'll fail", I'm saying you have a good start but you need to keep in mind that there are tons and tons of brilliant kids out there, esp. since the success bar keeps raising up. You need something to stand out in. I think your "company" would be a good start, and others have made good suggestions on other things.

Oh, a tip if you want to go serious. I'd start charging. At least offer more bang if they pay or something. Or do advertisement. Even if you do host others for real, you can make a profit in some sort of way if you get a million visitors at least. I can't even fanthom why you run so many servers (where are they located btw?) for not even one string attached.

Also, are you registered with the IRS? What are you? A LLC? A LTD?

You can't barely begin with Geocities or whatnot, if you don't seriously research and talk to people about how to really shape your company. Especially only 20 hours a week. :\ I work 15 hours on a seperate job, and still put in over 25 for my new company. Then again I sleep about 3 hours a day. :)

I do force popups/ads on my sites, the costs of running is a lot, there is no way I could cover it without advertising. But I'm not out to make any money, its just a hobby. Its not registered, I don't want to bother with the taxes on the 2 dimes I earn every year. The 110 or so servers are actually very few if consider my 1,000,000 clients. Thats something likw 10,000 on a server - which is ridiculously high, but I can do it with my load balancing :). I've got colocation service for my servers with a place in texas.

Its a hobby, but its really cutting into my social life - or any semblence of it I still have left heh.

Asian sophomore attending a decent high school in the Midwest... Enough said... only 4% of asians are accepted into the IVY's... your going to need to have STELLER grades/EC's...

Oh lord... that is just sick :(. What about ED?

would i be better suited for a liberal arts college? I'm considering Amherst(my father went there for grad school, am I legacy? :)) and Oberlin. Also, U Chicago and some of the non-ivies like Rice and Duke are possibilities too.

I think you actually have a shot everywhere, I just wouldn't make harvard your match/safety...;)
