Would great essays really help my chances? I know my SATs/SATIIs are not that great but would it be the Achilles heel for my chances? Will they look at my writing scores differently because the breakdown for my 2nd test, I had subscore of 68 as opposed to 63 on my 3rd test; for my 2nd test I had a writing sample subscore 61 as opposed to writing subscore 72 on my 3rd. I had a bad test day during December SAT IIs (chem 590, latin 630, and writing 670) For grades I have As and Bs. My last semester of junior year I had 3 Bs, 2As, and 1 A-. Prior to that I had 1 B, 2 B+s and rest were As. Do I have a shot?

I will give you my very subjective opinion. Please don't be disappointed, as I am not an admissions officer. :) O ya, I am assuming that you are CA resident.. right? US Citizen too right? If you are an international, then ignore these ratings.

Princeton-- 5%
Harvard-- i'd be surprised if they accepted you.
Brown-- 10%
JHU-- 23%
Stanford-- 5%
USC-- 40%
UCI-- 60%
UCSD-- 70%
UCLA-- 40%
UCB-- 20%
UCD--60%

I am not very familiar with the UCs, but I think you need some more upper-mid-range schools. I think for now,

Your reaches: Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, Brown

mid-range: JHU, USC, UCB
safeties: UCI, UCD, UCSD, UCLA

possible upper-mid-range schools: Cornell, UChicago, UVirginia, Northwestern.

These are certainly great schools, but once again, I am not an admissions officer.. :):):)

Thanks for your opinion.

I really dont mind whichever college I go to. A Harvard, Stanford, or Princeton acceptance wouldn't be a bad thing.

As long as I've got a shot, I'm satisfied.

And I like making the impossible possible.

It's a good attitude to have-- "I really dont mind whichever college I go to. A Harvard, Stanford, or Princeton acceptance wouldn't be a bad thing. As long as I've got a shot, I'm satisfied."

Something I should learn from my fellow CCers.. sigh

lol. thanks

anyone else?

oh yeah, you definitely have a shot at all those schools, including Harvard. Your SATs are not that good, but stellar rec letters, essays, and trasncript can make up for it.

Are you ranked 10th? or top 10 percent?

my school recently hosted a convention where i was the computer wiz.
the moderator is my teacher who i gave one of my recs to.

for the convention, i did most of the grueling work with data entries and spent some weekends helping out. at times i didnt leave school till late (latest was like 7). i even spent some time on weekends helping out.

ive taken most APs in my school (6). no one else has taken as many as I have. My school doesnt report rank but i'm in the top 10%. i dunno about my grades this semester but i know my essay is great. if a harvard alumni says its perfect, then i trust him.

if i cant get into harvard, princeton, or stanford then i'll raise the bar with my essays. if i go down, i go down throwing my best punches.

^ that attitude alone, if reflected throughout your application, will siginificantly increase your chances! Good luck. We need more people like you.

dawg, that attitude is really good to have and it can set you apart. but there aer a lot of asians out there who are involved with classical music. try to make your essays awesome enough to differentiate yourself from the pack.

but harvard is a bit of a long shot.

Jesus. u took way too many SAT/SAT iis

yeaaa, no kidding! first thing I thought was....haha nvm - it would have been wiser to take practice tests before officially taking them on test dates. imagine how much money Collegeboard got from you...yikes

if I were you I would only submit SAT 2s to the places that require them. don't be sending those scores thinking the extra tests taken will help you. heh, wow, how many of the SAT test days were you at this past year? hehe well good luck. if you took the ACT then you can pretty much hide those SAT IIs from the majority of even the Ivy League schools

your scores are inflated, you have taken them way too many times!

my prob on SATs is that when i get to the reading comprehension sections the text starts blurring. I dunno why but my endurance goes down after a while.

I've only taken SATs twice. I'm going for the third time.

I don't get enough sleep in h.s. Sometimes i'm just tired when I take these SAT IIs. I've prepped but I think my biggest mistake was doing so night before. I'm just so busy with school that I find it hard sometimes to set some time aside for studying these SAT/SAT IIs. I took a prep course and it took up most of my time that I ended up having bad grades that semester (2nd sem. jr. year). My mom gets ****ed whenever I bomb one and she goes OMG you wont go to college. TAKE THEM AGAIN! -_-

And no I did not write my essays on music. I wrote them on different topics and I made sure I did not beat the stick on my asian heritage.

oh yea i have a question.

for SAT/SATIIs
im thinking of sending in my report for Princeton, Harvard, and Brown instead of waiting for the free score reports that come with my January SATs.

If i send my reports now, wait, take the SAT test. if my results are good, then can i send them the report? if I do that, will they take it into consideration or no?

I know taking SATs 3rd time is prob gonna look bad. -_-

bump............

I would do something to set yourself apart, espescially for HYPS asians with your scores are not unusual(not to demean asians, but HYPS dont really want their classes to end up like UCI or UCB where the majority is asian, there needs to be diversity on campus)

so should i send them the score reports or just wait till i take my SATs?

wait till you take your sat's , if you neglect to submit a score itll look like you're trying to hide something which leads to a big fat rejection letter. Just send the mall your scores.

wow, the previous post was stupid "send them all" your scores
