What are my chances at U of Maryland?

Hello, I was wondering if any one out there could chance me...it would be appreciated, and I am out of state. I'm currently a Junior.

GPA:

About 3.3-3.4(don't know the actual value)...UW
Not sure what it is W.

ECs: Did some research with Physics teacher(astrophysics), and some research with Math teacher (differential geometry), Part time job (9th-10th), about 100 hours of community service, self-teaching Astrophysics 1(which is why my GPA is low...sadly, using the UChicago Graduate level books), Part-Time Job in 9th and 10th grade (10-15 hours per week, also contributed to my terrible GPA), SPEC (Physics club), Math Club

SAT:
2010 (750 M, 600 CR, 660 W)
Going to retake it in March hoping for 2100+

Major(s):
Major in Physics and a minor in Astronomy....undergraduate

Recs:
Mostly from my Math and Physics teachers....great recs...can verify my independent study

Forgot to add
Hook: Brother went to UMD

What state are you from? It makes a difference…more competition from NJ and NY…

Your brother going to UMD won’t be a help, but your SAT scores will probably be high enough to compensate for your GPA. It’s really important that you have really good grades this (Junior) year…those are the ones that will go on your application next year.

Also, have you taken “the most rigorous” courses (AP, etc.) that are offered at your high school?

What state?

As far as the SAT, most colleges including UMDCP superscores, so really concentrate on studying the CR part.

I’m in Virginia and I’m currently only taking one AP (can only take 3), but I plan on taking 3 or 4 my senior year (4 is the max).

I’m not entirely sure what my GPA value is, I’m just throwing out a number based off of memory.

I will most likely apply ED, if that helps.

Without question, you need to apply within the time limit for priority applications (this is true for everyone). It’s not a binding decision, and the acceptance rate is significantly higher for priority apps.

Hi, we are from Virginia and my DS was accepted with a 3.59 UW gpa and somewhat lower SATs than you. However, Maryland is raising the number of IS acceptances which means fewer OOS/Int’l acceptances plus Maryland is getting more competitive every year.

So, right now I’d say reach but Physics is not limited enrollment so that greatly increases your chances. Get your GPA up, if you think you will improve then retake the SATs and then I’d say it’s a match.

Please please please talk to your parents though, since you are OOS. I know quite a few kids who wanted to go to Maryland from Virginia but the OOS costs are very high and there is relatively little merit aid so they ended up going to college in Virginia. Your parents need to know that you may want them to pay $23k+/year for college ($39k+ with room and board and extras). Or go find yourself a some good external scholarships like DS did. ;)
