What are my chances at UMCP? Thanks!

Hey, I'm currently a junior in Maryland going to school in Silver Spring. I am also an Asian male and I was wondering if you guys could chance me. Thank you.

GPA:

Unweighted: 3.4 (Up until Junior year I have taken 5 AP classes. Planning to take 3 more Senior year. Everything else is Honors.)
Weighted:4.2

ECs: Debate Team, It's Academic, National Honors Society, Outdoor Track and Cross Country. Interned at a law firm during sophomore year and will be interning at a hospital during junior year's summer and also during senior year. A lot of community service at various places.

SAT: 1950 - stronger on critical reading and math.

Major(s):
Wanting to major in biology.

Community Service:
250 Hours. Helped at many soup kitchens and helped many handicapped kids.

Again, I am a asian male from maryland. I will also be doing ED

I think you are in. Just try to get you UW GPA up a little but your weighted GPA is great. UMD only looks at CR+M I believe so you will be fine.

Is it absolutely necessary that my gpa goes up? I’ve been struggling alot this junior year with 4 difficult ap classes. Also if I want to go to med school is umcp fine?

Since you are instate, I think you’ll probably be fine. Since biology is now a LEP, I don’t know if your GPA will keep you from initially getting accepted into Biology, or if they would start you as a general student. Regarding GPA, they always want to see grades trending upward (even though you’re taking really hard classes).
If you were not from Maryland, I think your chances would be questionable, but I’m guessing that because you are IS, you’ll be OK.

Yea, for the first quarter of my Junior year I actually messed up a lot because there were family problems and I let myself get a 2.8 GPA. 2nd quarter I got a 3.4. I’m not sure how to explain this… Also, getting into the Bio major will decrease my chances of getting in?

I think you will be fine. You have decent scores. On most applications they have a place to explain anything unusual (the family problems that messed with you GPA) just make sure to take advantage of that.
