What are my chances at University of Michigan?

Okay, so I have sent in my application already. To be technical, as of 9:25 p.m. on Friday 22nd. Lol. I love U of M, and it's where I want to go to college. I know it's very competitive....but I don't think I have a chance. I mean, maybe I'll be deferred till Spring, but what do ya'll think? I've applyed to the college of Literature, Science, and the Arts with preferred admit to their College of Pharmacy. crossing fingers So here it is: I admit that I'm not extroardinary student, so please don't laugh -especially compared to others here whom are just plain right amazing, and I admire ya'll-

GPA: 3.556 UW

ACT:27 (took the recent 9/16 one...but haven't gotten score yet)

Courses: 5 full year science class (honors biology, honors chemistry, anatomy, AP Biology, honors physics), 5 full year English classes (Honors English 9-11, College Writing, AP Literature), 4 full year Social studies/sciences (american government, AP US History, world history, psychology/sociology), 5 full year of Language (Spanish 2-4, AP Spanish, Latin 1-2), 1 full year computer/business class, one semester of Forensics, one semester of Graphic Design

EC: Book club, Spanish (Language Club), YWCA advisory board member (one of two students representing my school), Community Alliance Against Substance Abuse member, Science Olympiad 2 years, Mu Alpha Theta 1 year, Math Club 1 year, Key Club 3 years, NHS 2 years, Habitat for Humanity volunteer 2 years, Curious Kid's Museum active and recognized volunteer 3 years, 11 hours a week work at downtown public library for 1 year +, Economics Club where I met John Edwards, Genetic Conference atendee 2 years, spent 6 weeks this summer at Michigan State University working as an apprentice for a leading prof. of biotechnology

Teacher rec: My 2 year science teacher who just retired. She saw my patience and my work ethic and was quite impressed. She was the one who inspired me to pursue pharmaceuticals. She loves me! In addition, she wrote the rec. for my cousin who is now a freshman at U of M.

Essays: I tried sticking to one theme: My experience at Michigan State University this summer (I know.....probably would kill my chances at U of M now, but I feel that the experience there was so valuable for college and life)

High School: About 1200 students for all 4 grades with an Asian population of 3%, which I'm a part of :D Pretty small town in Soutwest Michigan.

Colleges I'm applying: U of M, MSU, and Saint Louis College of Pharmacy.

Other: I've attended at least 3 U of M seminars around my area...including driving an hour away to attend one in Holland, hahah. I'm Chinese and will be the first child in my family to attend college. MEAP $3,000 scholarship awarded this summer.

What high school do you go to? I go to Northville High School. According to my counselor, about 30% of the school gets accepted to U of M Ann arbor. I think your GPA AND ACT need to go up. Aim for a 30 on you ACT. Your GPA is quite low. How did you calculate it? An Admissions counselor from U of M came you our school and she gave this method for UW.
A+/A/A- 4.00
B+/B/B- 3.00
C+/C/C- 2.00
and so on.
I really think your ACT has to go.

Hm...I attended a Umich seminar a while back and Amanda (my Umich admissions counselor for my region) said that they got rid of the whole A- equals A 4.0 thing...instead, they look at the GPA as a raw and look at your classes afterwards...so I'm definitely crossing my fingers and hoping that they recognize my academics.

Yea, I totally understand what you mean about my ACT. I took the September test date and won't be getting my score back for another 3 weeks or so...but I'm pretty confident on that, but not sure if it'll be a 30...kind of scared.

College is so stressful!!!

Oh, I go to Saint Joseph High School in southwest Michigan :) We had 21 students go to Umich last year.

based on your stats, you will get into UMichigan, but just barely.

indbur1, ah....so much relief after hearing that I might get in. It totally does suck, like everyone has been telling me not to worry and that I'll be fine. But that's only because they think I'm a studious and smart student....little do they know my GPA and ACT, they only ASSUME!

I don't think I can handle a "deferred until Spring" from Michigan...I don't know. The wait would be too hard for me! I really want to get in. And if I don't and have to settle for MSU, everyone will know I got rejected from Umich. Lol, this sounds as if college isn't my real problem...but my pride that is. W/e.

Uh...anyway, my back-up back-up if after being rejected from Umich and I still want to pursue pharmacy, I think I'll apply for Saint Louis College of Pharmacy (priority applicant).

Thanks everyone!

UMich has a very strange way of admitting. Students in our local high school who had lower ACTs than yours have made it in (they don't always do well once there ... but that's another story). My feeling is that they want a certain number from each area, so you may have that in your favor. You did the most important thing ... you got your app in early!

Your score may not be that high, but you seem to have what it takes to succeed. A hard worker with a 27 will do better in college than a slacker with a 32! Just understand that you may have some ground to make up the first year. There will be many students who had more academic opportunity than you (I am assuming that your school has less opportunity than, say, Bloomfield Hills Andover --- but I could be wrong). By the end of the first year, though, you'll be on more equal footing & things get easier.

Be thankful UMich has rolling admission --- otherwise, you'd be worried until April 1st!! Good luck.

Let us know if you get in. Thanks!

Kelsmom, thank you so much for the kind words! I don't think quotas are legal...but then again, it's one of those issues again that they're (colleges) not suppose to do, but sometimes they secretly do it anyway. Eh.

Yep, I want to succeed...and I hope my essays and courses look the part :D Gah, I do so badly on tests! I can't blame it on bad test-taking...I personally think I need to be more prepared!!

Yah for rolling admission! I could be hearing before the end of the year crosses fingers

einstein, yep! I'll definitely report any denial, acceptance, or deferral :)

I also plan on going into pharmacy but Im going to MSU.

I have a 3.8 Umich GPA with a 27ACT(retaking for scholarships). I chose not to go to Michigan because I grew up as a state fan, I didnt want to write any more essays or get recs. Also I think its better to be a genius among idiots then an idiot among genius's. If I want to get into pharmacy school it would be better to go to an easier school to get my GPA up. So whatever you end up doing MSU and UMich will be good choices.

pretty much a given

you need about 100 points on the old "scale" to get in

4.0 = 80 points
3.5 = 70 points

ACT 27 = 10 points/12

+10 points michigan residency = 90 points

Strength of School /8 points
Strength of courses taken /8 points
Essays /3

so thats gives you around 109 points at max
maybe taken strength of school down 4 points and essays a point and you have a 105. Just barely, but enough to get in

Uof M is infamous for requiring high grade points (3.8 - 4.0) and mediocre ACTs (25-29). Also the requirements for MI students are lower than for out-of-state.

My guess is your ACT is OK. The GPA is questionable. Depends on the competition.

Your Guidance C. should be able to access your chances.

Good luck.

I got into U of M!! Yah! Proud to be Wolverine :)

Thanks everyone for responding!!!!!

I was deferred for 3 weeks before being accepted on December 16th....what a terrible thing to do to make me wait.

well done!!

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
