I'm going to apply early decision to either Northwestern or Vanderbilt, with that said, what are my chances at Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Wake Forest, University of Michigan, and University of Wisconsin - Madison?

Vandy and Northwestern are pretty reachy because of your test scores. I’d say Wake Forest is a solid match.

What would you say the chances for Northwestern and Vanderbilt are. I forgot to say i have a cousin who just graduated from northwestern.

He just said those two are “reachy,” which I would agree with to an extent.

Can you explain what you mean by reachy. As in Big reach- not happening, reach - not likely but possibly, slight reach - have legitimate shot but not quite 50/50. Can you define the extent of the reach you think it is?

What do you mean by to an extent?

@LetsG0Mets, having a cousin that graduated Northwestern does not qualify you to have legacy status, so this fact will have no influence whatsoever on your application if this is why you mentioned that. That being said, the average SAT score at Northwestern is a 2180, so your scores are too low. The acceptance rate being 23% last year at NU, i would put your chances somewhere around 7-10%. So i guess thats a reach on your provided scale: not impossible, but chances are slim unless you are able to pull up your SAT.

Thanks for the honest response. Would that 7-10% chance increase with early decision. Apparently Northwestern accepts 40% of early decision applicants.

^Yes i think it would. I believe that demonstrating a high level of interest towards NU through ED would put you somewhere in the mid 20’s (24-26%) in terms of your potential acceptance rate. Then again, if you are willing to study hard and take the October SAT, i really think it could help your already strong resume exponentially.

These are all big reaches except for University of Wisconsin… If you’re white or Asian, that SAT score needs to come up 200 points before you have a shot at these schools.

What is your class rank or estimated percentile?

SAT score is pretty low for Northwestern and Vanderbilt. You should increase by about 200 points. High 2100 would be ok though.

@Mets, just for reference, take a look at this scattergram:
[Northwestern University Admissions Results for Class of 2013](http://www.collegedata.com/cs/admissions/admissions_tracker_result.jhtml?schoolId=1803&classYear=2013)
You can see that your scores put you somewhere in limbo, where admissions are at their most random. There are those who are accepted with lower scores than you, and those that are rejected with higher scores. This should tell you that, while this is a reach, for those with your scores NU will really activate its holistic approach in the admissions process. Therefore, make sure to write a killer essay, make the most of your EC’s in the time you have left at school, and generally, if you can’t get your numerical statistics up, get the subjective aspects of your application into their fullest potential before the deadline.
Good luck!

I’m in the top 15% just missing the top 10%; however, my grade is extremely competitive relative to other grades, in a very good public high school. Any other grade i’d be well into the top 10%
