High reach/rejection. W&M is extremely compettive for OOS applicants.

I think the above assessment may be a bit harsh. Your GPA is low, but that will also be viewed contextually—does your school have grade deflation issues, or is it known to be particularly competitive, etc.? That may mitigate the review of your GPA. Your test scores are good enough, but not high enough to offset other deficiencies. Your ECs are very solid. You will need your essay and teacher recs to be very strong. Definitely a “reach” but I wouldn’t say impossible by any measure. If your GPA were 3.75 you would be a good candidate, but being below 3.5 is a problem.

W&M and UNC just rough for OOS good luck!

^ and UVA

Does your school provide class rank? Has your school sent students to W&M recently?

I think your SAT score looks quite competitive. It looks like average OOS was 1420 in 2017 and may be 10 points or so higher for 2018 based on overall increase. Your extracurriculars look OK.

The GPA is probably the biggest issue and it is difficult to say how they will evaluate it. On the plus side, W&M looks fairly holistically at applicants and I think you’ll get a good reading.

Here are the stats for W&M, from the SCHEV website:

http://research.schev.edu//enrollment/B10_FreshmenProfile.asp

The overall median GPA of admitted students is 4.24. Here is an in-state/OOS breakdown:

http://research.schev.edu/iprofile.asp?UID=231624

The acceptance rate for in-state is 45%; for OOS, it’s 29%.

Not sure about W&M but I know UVA wants to see that you take 5 core classes each year, they include language as a core. Did you not take any math or science class your senior year? You may have a chance in state but out of state would be a reach. Also, if your school ranks, about 90% of students from schools that rank, are in the top 10% of their class. OOS is very competitive at W&M and UVA. They take about 30% from OOS. I believe UNC only takes 18% from OOS. Good luck.

Congratulations on your hard work and success!

I agree with the general gist of the above comments: you’re a very good student and will go to a very good college; your GPA, though certainly not weak, will probably make W&M a reach for you; and it is absolutely reasonable for you to apply. Make yourself shine in your essays! Show admissions who you are and what you’ll bring to the campus! Make them root for you!

I might suggest Holy Cross in Worcester and Dickinson College, and maybe Denison University, as some other options you might explore as well. They also have great academics and beautiful campuses, and strengths in areas that seem of interest to you.

Anyway, good luck with W&M!

I don’t think your chances are as bleak as others have painted it. I think your school in particular is in a very unique position and hopefully that will be reflected in the school profile where it can put into context the rest of your application. You might find it helpful to check Naviance if other students have gotten into W&M in the past, what their relative stats are compared to yours to help put things in perspective. Out of state admissions is very competitive and you will be competing against other qualified applicants, so you will want to stand out – definitely take advantage of the essays to do so, as well as any teacher recommendations and if you have the opportunity to interview.

@momofthreeboys is correct that William & Mary, like UVA, like strongly prefers students that have taken all the core science courses (biology, chemistry, physics) including the equivalent of four years of math, foreign language, social studies, English, and science, however it is not necessarily a deal breaker.

Best of luck with the process and let me know if I can answer any questions.
