What are my chances for getting into UW?

Hi everyone!
I love UW and all things UW! I have always wanted to go there! And I just wanted to know how I would stack up for admissions. Here are my stats:

High School Junior

3.75 GPA( 8: AP Classes + UW/HS cross-over classes)
--> (AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Language & Composition, AP Economics, APCalculus, UW Spanish 4th year, UW Fluency in Information Technology)

SAT: 1680, but I will have it raised to around 1800 by the summer.
ACT: 22, but I will definitely have it higher by summer (28ish?) , it was just my first time and had no prior knowledge of the test.

Extra Currics:
1. Secretary at my city's museum, and have been volunteering there for 7 years.
2. I am Indian(from India not Native American) and I perform cultural events.
3. Honor Society & other various clubs
4. Volunteer at local library
5. Tutor
6. Literally have over 600 hours of comm serv.
7. I play club soccer and play basktball.

I am also in-state and a minority.

So how do my statistics compare to UW admissions. This is my dream school!
Thank you.

I’m not sure Indians are a URM.

I’d try to get your SAT a bit higher than 1800. Class rigor looks good, maintain your GPA. And don’t skimp on your essays.

But you appear to be on track.

Indians= Asians, so they are not URMs…

Raise SAT to above 1800, and you should get in for sure.

I know some people who were rejected/waitlisted with an SAT above 1800 this year, and it might get tougher next year. So a high SAT does not assure admission. But your ECs are good. You should definitely focus on increasing your SAT or ACT score significantly.

I think you will have decent chances if you can lift up your SAT score.

your gpa might kill you, my friend got rejected with your same exact resume except he is koren with a 1880. i got accepted with a 3.96 and around a 1700 and i am white! plus he had more AP classes, like 7 if i remember correctly.

Raise your sat a bit, and write an essay that wets their panties and your in.

Raise your SAT score, continue working hard on your extracurricular activities, and write AMAZING essays and you should be fine =)

Not good. Most advice here is out of date. This year Udub was MUCH harder to get into instate than before and will be next year and so on. See articles and stats from today’s paper.

[Local News | Why straight-A’s may not get you into UW this year | Seattle Times Newspaper](http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2014670294_admissions03m.html)

^I think most people know that UW has been having issues with budget cuts.

Sure, it will become harder to get into UW next year (if you are In-State) but people shouldn’t let that discourage them from applying. So technically you had no need to say that these advices are “outdated” because we are very much well aware of UW’s financial crisis. However, it is good to still encourage people to apply and hope for the best rather than the worst.

Thanks everyone on their input! UW really means a lot to me, and the fact that almost all of these were positive comments, it makes me feel so great.
And I most of you said increase my SAT, but the thing is I have taken it 2 times and it increase by about 150 points, and I took the Princeton review cource but I don’t know what I am doing wrong on the test! I’ve done two practice books(Princeton reveiw book& the collegr board blue book)!
I always do very poorly on the reading ( 510) I have no idea what to do to improve that! If you can help me with that, it would be a great help! Thank you all so so so very much!

College Board, who administers the SAT has an online course that is really, really good. You can take a number of practice tests and get your scores. They will also show you the ones you got wrong and how to do them. I believe it is $69 and good for one year. I definitely recommended it.

Actually I find few HS kids are all that aware of budget issues and the like. I also think the OP’s test scores are WAY below what will be expected and grades are right in the average range which was about a 3.8 unweighted last year and a 1240 or so SAT M+V or 27 ACT. Yes there is chance for admission but I would call it a real reach right now and plan to apply to WSU, Western and others as back-ups.
I’d expect admits this year to average 28 on the ACT or close to 1300 on the SAT M+V scores which would be around a 1900-1950 total average.

I was at the seniors orientation a few days ago at the UW. An admissions counselor said that the average GPA of admitted applicants (or all applicants, SORRY I forgot) on a 4.0 scale was right below a 3.8. Either way, the competition was stiff this year.

@barrons: My apologies. When I said “most people”, I probably should have said that most people on this forum are aware of the budget issues.
I agree that UW’s admissions this year was tough, and I have stated that it may become more difficult in the upcoming years.
However, most people forget that UW still does a “holistic view” on each applicant’s application which means they look at EVERYTHING. So it’s not just having a good GPA/SAT score, but also having written excellent essays, extracurricular activities (displaying commitment and leadership), and class rigor.

I do not disagree with the things you are saying. Who knows. Maybe next year UW will get rid of the ‘holistic’ review.

@UWHUSK250: My daughter took the test 3 times and it went down each time- standardized test anxiety was what we were told. DO NOT spend a ton of money on test prep. It never helped and we wasted so much money. In my opinion seems like some people are better test takers than others. You have to compensate with good grades, leadership positions, and of course if you can dig down deep and find some minority in your background that would be the biggest help of all (sorry to say, but reverse discrimination is making it impossible for run of the mill “white” kids).

Just adding in here on essays -

ontcob said, “and of course if you can dig down deep and find some minority in your background that would be the biggest help of all (sorry to say, but reverse discrimination is making it impossible for run of the mill “white” kids).”

This is really important. However, remember that ‘diversity’ isn’t only through culture and race. It could be through interests, religion, sexual orientation, etc. It doesn’t really matter, as long as you write an amazing essay to knock some socks off!

With test taking, it really depends on the person. For some people, their scores go down. Sometimes, it increases by 400+ points. So do what you think is best for yourself, but with time ticking, manage your time wisely.

really dont stress… i go to an high school in washington with 200 seniors, im sure around 180 will actually graduate on time. as i know more then 30 people got in, and there are literally 3 rejection letters, to people in one ap classes, and one had a 3.4 and the other played no sports and had a 3.6. it really isnt hard, otherwise how can you explain my friend getting in with a 3.3, 1510 SAT, and no leadership at all, cheer team 2 years and not taking a full schedule their senior year!
