What are my chances for Ivies and top schools?? I will chance back many people.

I am a junior at a very competitive public school that does not rank in Ohio. My GPA during freshman and sophomore year unweighted was a 3.6, however, when my junior year is over I will have close to a 4.0 unweighted. In addition to this I have taken 4 AP’s this year: Econ, Gov, Stat, and Environmental Science. Last year I took AP Psych and APUSH and got a 5 on both. Next year I plan on taking almost all AP’s. I have taken the SAT once and got a 780 on CR 700 on math and 650 on WR (2130) and plan to take it again.

My EC’s by time of graduation are 4 years of mock trial and 3 years of model un, both with decorated awards and probable leadership positions next year. Also NHS and 4 years of Relay for Life if that counts.

Also, I don’t know if this matters but I wrote a letter to a very prominent person at the Cleveland Clinic in charge of governmental affairs telling of my love for politics and law and she offered me a seat on the Republican national convention planning committee. We have yet to meet but I am hoping to create some programs I have thought up using the Cleveland clinic’s resources.

Also I have extensive work experience in landscaping and have created my own business although it isn’t LLC registered

unfortunatel, I am a white male whose parents make around $100,000

So basically do you think I will get into Georgetown/NYU/Cornell/Dartmouth/UC Berkeley?

  1. SAT score needs to increase, good thing you seem to know that.
  2. GPA could be a problem. You will need to have a high class rank to prove that your school is, in fact, competitive and difficult.
  3. Many, many students have the ECs you listed. Leadership, debate, NHS, and multiple clubs have little meaning unless you have received actually prestigious honors. Remember that colleges like to have diversity and are especially attentive to original ECs that few students have.

Your SAT (1480 r+m) puts you in the 75th percentile in Cornell. And is high for NYU too. Your GPA when averaged will be a 3.7 UW (assuming you get 4.0 junior year), which is fine for NYU but in the lows for Dartmouth and Cornell. Your ECs won’t hold you down against other applicants, but one big thing: SAT SUBJECT TESTS. Ivies either need them or “strong requires” them. Subject tests are a big matter when deciding your chances to Ivies (google Academic Index), but assuming you you get 750+ on your SAT 2s:
NYU: Match
Cornell: Low Reach
Dartmouth: Mid Reach

Though your SAT displays how intelligent you are, many ivy leagues require SAT subject matter tests. It also depends on what in the college you want to apply to. If you wanted to apply to an engineering program in an ivy league, I would recommend getting your math on the SAT to a 750+ and taking two math/science related SAT subject matter tests. Your GPA is a little below average for most ivy leagues, but they like seeing upward trends in your grades. If possible, I would recommend you add in volunteering in random youth organizations, just so you can pad up your EC’s.

What do you mean when you say my EC’s wont hold me down against other applicants. Also, I forgot to mention that I have been a manager at the landscaping business I work at for 3 years.
