Hello, I want to apply to UK universities as an American, specifically University of Edinburgh and Aberdeen.
I am retaking the ACT in September with hopes of getting 32, right now it is 31.
I have 2 SAT II’s and taking Chemistry in October with a predicted score of 700+ and retaking Math I with hopes of a 690+:
Literature = 700
Math i = 660
Unweighted GPA = 4.0
I am also taking AP Psychology and AP Chemistry in Senior Year.
Do you think there is hope?
Psychology according to other thread.
What are your SAT II’s in?
You do have one problem, in that Psych AP, even though relevant to your subject, isn’t regarded as one of the stronger AP subjects from an academic pov, and it may not be counted when assessing your qualifications.
Chemistry is a good choice, but you can’t count the SATII and AP separately. You need at least one other subject (ideally two) at either AP or SATII.
While requirements for internationals are often more lenient than they are for domestic candidates, you wouldn’t want to be too far below the bar.
Edinburgh wants a minimum of ABB (though the typical offer is AAB) including two of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics; for US students doing the ACT that translates to 27 minimum on the ACT plus two SAT Subject tests with 650 minimum OR two APs at Grade 4 in 2 of the above 4 subjects. You have the ACT and the math subject test (barely!), so if you get an offer it will most likely be conditional you getting a 4 on the Chemistry AP. Obviously, you won’t know that for sure until July, so you will want a back up plan. That you meet the minimum doesn’t’ guarantee you an offer, but with a decent PS & LoR you stand a solid shot.
Aberdeen’s entry requirements are just BBB, with at least 2 of those being in math & science. For US students the requirements for science (which is what psych is under) are ACT of 26 plus 1 SAT Subject Test with a score of 600 from or 1 AP Subject Test with a grade of 3 or above in either Math, Biology, Chemistry, or Physics. So, you already meet Aberdeen’s requirements.
It’s quite possible that you could get an ‘unconditional’ offer from Aberdeen and a conditional from Edinburgh, in which case you ‘firm’ Edinburgh and ‘insure’ Aberdeen.
keep in mind that psychology is very competitive.
My SAT II’s are in Literature, Math, and Chemistry. Math and Chemistry are required. I have an ACT of 31. I’m retaking Math and taking Chemistry in October.
Thank you collegemom3717, I really appreciate your input. I am taking Chemistry SAT 2 in October and hope to get 700+. I am retaking the Math I one as well with hopes of 690+.
Yes, I know about AP Psychology being considered a “B” group. But it is considered one of the easier AP subjects to self study and I believe that it could be helpful in supporting my application.
It will certainly show your interest in the subject. Use that in your Personal Statement, which is all about why you want to study psychology.
Good luck!
