What are my chances for University of Penn CAS ED?

Hi, I'm a Penn ED applicant applying to the college of arts and sciences and I was wondering if you guys could chance me for admission to Penn. Thanks!

ACT: 34
SAT II: Bio M-770 Spanish Lit-700 Chem-620
Unweighted GPA: 3.9
Top 5% of class (I assume, our school doesn't rank)
Senior year classes: AP Bio, AP Euro, AP Econ, AP Spanish, Honors Calc, Honors English, International Foods (elective), Gym
AP Scores so far: Just Psych, 5

Extracurriculars:
Boys Cross Country- Varsity 3 years, captain senior year
Karate, Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing- I have been participating since I was 5 (so for about 12 years)
National Honors Society- Grades 11 and 12 (our school inducts in 11th grade), Secretary during grade 12
DECA- two-year state finalist in my event
Transition project ambassador- I help freshmen acclimate to high school
I stayed at Penn during the summer of 2011 for a 3-week summer program

Work Experience:
I have worked at my karate school since January 2011
I refereed soccer games in my town for 3 years, after passing the necessary test

Volunteering:
I went to Costa Rica for 9 days this summer to help clean up and plant trees and crops in a small town
I volunteered at a special needs soccer clinic during my sophomore year for about 5 weeks

Essays:
My common app essay was not bad, I wrote about how i taught myself how to cook and how that has shaped me as a person
"Move" Essay- I wrote about how I was a mover, and how I would help others move by developing treatments and/or cures for neurological diseases (I want to major in Bio Bases of Behavior, I am mainly interested in neurology)
Engage academically essay- I wrote about how I would love to take advantage of the resources of Penn at the HUP, and how I already knew the city since I had spent 3 weeks over the summer there

Recommendations:
My 2 teacher recommendations were probably pretty good, they were both from teachers who really liked me and knew me as a person. One of the teachers was the person who piqued my interest in neurology
My guidance counselor also knew me pretty well, so I assume her recommendation was also pretty decent

Interview:
Pretty good I think, my interview started off kinda slowly but by the end, my interviewer was happy, as she had talked a lot in response to my questions, and she said I would fit in well at Penn and she would put in a good word for me.

I am a legacy, my grandpa went to Penn.

Thanks!

Bump pleasee

Low reach but lots of people apply ED to UPenn with files like these and still get rejected or deferred.

The fact that you’re a hooked applicant applying ED increases your chances compared to other applicants significantly. You have the grades and ACT score. Your extracirriculars look like they show involvement too. The essay choice is an intresting one, but I suppose that if you can convey a good message, and it really allows colleges to get to know you, then it should be fine. I give you a high match-low reach as your chances because of all the things working in your favor. The only thing keeping me from giving you just a high match is the fact that I am pretty sure that Penn received the largest number of early applicants out of all the ivys this year, so it is defenitley going to be competitive. Good luck!

Chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1418125-chance-me-duke-other-top-schools.html

oh okay thanks guys! and yeah I’ll definitely chance back

My guess is you will be deferred ED. Legacy helps (and makes deferral more likely), but your numbers/EC’s do not separate you from many, many other applicants at Penn. Also, your curriculum looks weak at least until senior year (which of course cannot be considered ED), and I think Penn will want to see how you do 1st semester senior year with that rigorous curriculum.

How strong is your school system? Are you in top 5% or may top 1%? That would make a big difference at Penn too. Good luck!

Your GPA looks great and so do your ACTs but your subject tests are a little shaky. Legacy and ED will DEFINITELY help though and you look like you have pretty decent, leadership ECs. Your recommendations and essays may seem a bit ordinary to the adcoms though, just warning you. Some people have crazy interesting and inventive essays that could surpass yours. Overall I think you have a decent shot especially considering the fact that you’re applying ED. Good luck I’d say you should have good news coming your way soon!

yeah i was thinking i might get deferred… my school is very strong, one of the higher ranked public schools in my state (NJ), and out of a class of 320, I’d say I am probably in the top 3 or 4 percent. Also, so far this year, I have all As and one B+ in AP Euro, so maybe that will help. Thanks!

And thanks vandy, my essays might be ordinary, but I know at least one of my recommendations is good and makes me seem really interesting- it was from my english teacher of two years who really liked me and saw my true personality and aspirations as a person. I’m hoping that helps me out haha. Thanks, i hope so!

No problem! I have the exact same grades as you with a B+ in AP Euro so I think that I speak for everyone when I say the colleges will know that’s a hard course

Oh okay cool, yeah it’s tough haha I bet they’ll understand.

bump bump bump

I think you have a pretty good shot!

Thanks! I hope so, we’ll see soon enough

bumppppppppp

Legacy, summer program involvement, grades, scores all impressive and assist with acceptance. You sound like a stellar candidate! Good luck!

Thank you!

bumppppppppp

help me out guys ill chance back!

bump bumpppp
