What are my chances? HYP. Thanks.

Greetings College Confidential,
I'm an avid reader of the forums, but i've never posted before. I'm looking for anyone's thoughts regarding my chances into HYP. My stats are as follows:

Senior. White Male. From the midwest. I am a triplet. I live in a rural area.

Academics are good. 4.00 unweighted. All A+'s my junior year. I took the ACT twice. I got 34 Composite both times. As far as sub-scores go, i got a 35 on both E and M both tests as well as a 33 on R. My Science went from a 32 to a 31 but my Writing went up from an 8 to an 11. I'm not sure if a 31 on science is low or not, but if they don't superscore my test i would definitely send them the second test with a higher writing score.

AP scores: Sophomore: WHAP (5); Junior: APUSH (5), CALC AB (5), CHEM (4), PHYSICS (4); Senior: taking BIO and CALC BC.

I think i was commended status on the PSAT test, i was a point off from the semifinalist cut i think.

My high school stopped recognizing class rank last year. For my class and future classes they've implemented a laude system. I know for a fact i am in the top 5% of my class. I am sure I'd be valedictorian or salutatorian if my school had rank.

As far as EC's go, i think i've done my fair share. My greatest passion has been playing ice hockey. I've played for 11 years, since i was in kindergarten. Our community has a rich ice hockey tradition and we foster a competitive squad year after year despite our declining population. I skate year-round, at least 2 times a week during the offseason, usually more. I've skated on countless summer teams and triple A teams throughout my adolescence. I've traveled to all parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin as well as to North Dakota, Philadelphia, and Canada for hockey tournaments.

In high school, I've been on varsity for both sophomore and junior years. As a freshmen i skated at the bantam/midget level, (outside of school). Our team won a state championship that year.

A lot of my volunteering has come out of hockey. Pond Hockey volunteering, Learn-to-skate sessions and volunteer camp lessons probably give me about 100 hours.

Other than hockey i participate in DECA and FBLA at my school. Through these clubs I've helped raise significant charitable donations. I've competed at State for both events during my junior year and am currently an officer for both organizations as a senior. I'm a Pledgemaker, member of NHS, and have been on the honor roll all my life. Currently I am a mentor to freshmen and meet twice a week for tutoring and, well, mentoring. Outside of school, I've been involved in Leadership camps and groups, where i've committed a lot of my time to community service and leadership skill development. To put a number on the leadership i'd go with almost 200 hours.

My academic passions include almost every subject. Im best at math, and I'm a good writer. I like chemistry and biology. I'm curious about spanish and business as well.

I plan on writing about my experiences with hockey and other sports growing up. This would be what i've learned from these experiences and how my family has been an integral part of these activities. It would address overall life lessons and family.

In my other essay(s) i would write a more creative piece touching on my intellectual curiosities and desire to learn. I'd write about my desire to learn spanish or my fervent research into finance. I could write about how i've excelled at math over the years and am one of a handful of kids at my school for which they had to add the Calc BC class.

If there is anything else that you might find helpful in "chancing" me for these great schools, please just let me know. I took some SAT subject tests, Chem, USH, and Math 2. These scores will arrive in the next week or so.

If you are still reading, I sincerely thank you for your time.

Good luck to everyone.

Bump.

Lol i’d appreciate any sort of comment instead of just reading my stats to compare them to yours. (this is to other HYP hopefuls). Thanks.

Do you plan on getting recruited for hockey?

I don’t plan on being recruited. Thanks.

Then ECs are probably too weak.

Yea, EC’s are an issue. Otherwise fine.

Ok. I appreciate your thoughts. I’m hoping to become president of our local chapter of deca this year and will play varsity hockey another year as a senior. I’d love to play college hockey, i’m pretty good  but i don’t think i’m big enough. I’m only 5’7". Obviously I’ll need to write some good essays.

Thanks again.

if you go far in deca that would help additionally, or if you improved enough to be college caliber

2 ways you could increase your chances.

please chance back http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1225356-compsci-schools-students-bad-stats-like-me-uc-chancers-please-look.html

I never understood why people made HYP chance threads. I am sure you already know you how you stand among other applicants, so I don’t see what the extra/lowered confidence a few comments can bring you.

Here is pretty much your most comprehensive idea of applicants:
[Princeton University Overview - CollegeData College Profile](http://www.collegedata.com/cs/data/college/college_pg01_tmpl.jhtml?schoolId=111)
[Yale University Overview - CollegeData College Profile](Yale University Overview | CollegeData)
[Harvard College Overview - CollegeData College Profile](Harvard College Overview | CollegeData)

Thanks for the comments. As far as excelling in deca, i’ll try my best. Unfortunately the international competition isn’t until may, which might make it useless as far as college admissions. I would find out whether i qualify for internationals in march though. Do you think it would be possible/worth it to supplement that information late?

As far as the point of making the thread, i’m not entirely sure that i know my chances amongst other applicants. I know my academics are perhaps up to par, but it’s hard for me to assess the value of my extracurriculars. Indeed, at least from my perspective, i’ve put in a ton of time playing hockey and competing in deca and fbla. I’ve worked with a handful of students to raise charitable donations. One was over 1400 dollars and we are working on another. The value of this thread, other than confidence boosting or dropping, is that it allows me to compare what i’ve done to what others have, and narrow my focus toward what i may need to improve in the final few months, if at all possible.

Again, thank you for your comments. I’ll be applying to my state public school as well as maybe notre dame, although they don’t offer merit scholarships . . . ?

Might look at Holy Cross plays Division1 hockey. HC is a great school with good combination of academics and athletics/school spirit. Holy Cross has a nice campus 1 hour from Boston.

My Sat II Scores just came in from the October sitting.
I think they are pretty decent. I’m wondering if i should retake chem, and/or if i should take a couple different subjects?

How does reporting these scores work? By sitting? What are your suggestions? Thanks.

U.S. History 780
Chem 730
Math II 800

This is a decent resume. However, I do not see that you have carried yourself enough to truly have a chance at HYP.

i see that you have only taken 7 AP classes. You need at like 16 for hyp and other elite universities

I appreciate the responses guys. My high school doesn’t offer 16 AP classes lol. And there is no way i’d be able to take that many self-studying on the side anyways. A girl from my school got into Harvard last year. But she didn’t even pass her AP tests… She was “from Iran” though.

Good luck to everyone with their apps!

Don’t listen to the haters. You have a decent chance at HYP - just like everyone else who has your grades and test scores. Subjective factors like EC’s, teacher recs, interview, and your personal essay will distinguish you from the other applicants. Try to make yourself stand out in these areas, since they are the ones that matter now. HYP are definitely still reaches (because they are for every one), but I encourage you to try anyway. Good luck!

Yes, and thanks. I appreciate the advice.

The ivies love triplets, are your sibs also applying?

I think what most here are trying to tell you is that most successful unhooked applicants at HYP, in addition to great rank and scores, will have honors and awards that are truly rare among high school students. Their accomplishments typically go beyond the local level.

With so many great students, it’s these unusual accomplishments that usually puts the unhooked in.

But things like being a triplet can interest them is they veto al 3, being from the rural MW is a plus and other soft factors will weIgh in. So while they are a major Reach, who knows?
