My mother makes $73,000 a year and i make around $6,000
Live in California, but looking to go out of state to Wisconsin Madison
Father has never been in my life from day one and has not contributed one cent.
I dont have any savings, and she has around 20,000 i believe.
Merit wise i suck with a 2.9hs gpa and a crappy and lots of w's but with a 3.33gpa for college
I am chinese trying to pursue finance and my mom is a permanent resident that has been here for over 20 years and has completed 4 yrs of college

I used the calculator in the sticky for fin aid and it said contribution would be around 11.5K a year

Does that seem right....?
If so that isnt bad as i can pay at least half from part time jobs, my mom contributes 1 or 2k and a few thousand from loans, and as a transfer student from a cc that would be great.

I don't know anything about the single parent thing and how they would include your Dad, but for $73k, the calculator seems to make sense. You may wish to check each school site for info as to how they do it. Most people are in the east, it is very late back there, so you will likely have more answers tomorrow.

As far as your father's income, fAFSA only asks for the income of the custodial parent (and if there is one, the custodial parent's spouse.) It doesn't ask for the noncustodial parent.

Check UW's website for what they need for FA. They probably don't require the CSA, which would ask about your DAd, but they may have their own FA form which does. If they don't, then your EFC is probably fairly accurate. IF they do, they may also have a form to fill out indicating no contact from your father.

YOu really need to look at their site and see what they require.

Ok what exactly does this mean

Based on the information we have on record for you, your EFC is 17113. Your
school will use this number to determine your financial aid eligibility for
Federal grants, loans, and work study, and possibly available funding from your
state and school. You are not eligible for a Federal Pell Grant but you may be
eligible for other aid.

this means that your expected family contribution (what you and your mom are expected to pay) is $17,113

You are not eligible for a pell grant but you may be eligible for loans.

the cost of attendance for u-w, madison out of state is $29,994

29,994 - 17, 113 = $12, 881 (your demonstrated need)

the $12, 881 could be met with grants, loans, or could just be gapped and you would have to come up with the $ on your own.

Your expected financial contribution will be $17,113.
This is the amount that your family will be expected to contribute to your education. If you attend a school that meets 100% of need, above that amount is likely to be met by the school by any combination of grants, loans and work study. If the school does not meet 100% of need, it is anyones guess what your aid package will look like.
PROFILE may indentify addtional resources or additional qualifiying expenses.
You will not be eligible for Pell grant- but you may be eligible for Perkins or Stafford loans, grants and work study.

as an outa stater, what are chances that my need would be met?

at an out of state public school, if you do not get a merit or athletic scholarship, count on spme workstudy and the rest in loans (thir first priority is to provide an affordable education to their in-state taxpayers.
