I’ve heard that UMD College Park seems to randomly choose who they give their b/k scholarships too. I’m wondering what my chances are. Now, the scholarship used to be for minorities, so that probably still plays a role. That would explain the seemingly random trend. I am a MD resident. So, my gpa is 3.92 unweighted with a weighted of about 5.33 and I got 1480 on the new sat out of 1600. I have a bunch of ecs and maybe a couple leadership positions. I have a job and will have taken 6 APs in total in high school. I’m in NHS and I’m a hispanic female. Class rank is 9 of 303. I want to major in Electrical Engineering, would that increase my chances? Haven’t applied yet and I haven’t decided what to write for my essay yet, but I’m a pretty ok at writing. Let me know what you guys think plz. Wondering if I should also apply to Penn State or Virginia Tech to see if with scholarships they’d be any cheaper than MD.
It’s seemingly random. Very diverse group invited to the competition. Apply, put in a strong application, and see how it goes. Good luck!
Thanks!
@Ohboycollege - At UMD, only students admitted into the Honors College are eligible for the BK Scholarship. To be admitted into the Honors College, you must apply by the Priority Deadline (Nov 1).
Every year, approximately 400 students (from those admitted to the Honors College) are invited to interview for the BK. About 250 of them get the Full Ride BK. The others get a Partial BK. GPA and SAT scores are only 2 of the deciding factors
