What are my chances of getting accepted into any Cal State school for fall 2020?

I’m applying to Cal Poly SLO and SDSU (and LMU, Boulder, UW, USD)…

Unweighted GPA = 3.58
SAT score = 1280 (680 reading, 600 math)
I have taken 3 AP classes and 2 honors courses.
I’m also from California, so I would be in-state for most of these schools.

I plan on majoring in communications or philosophy, but I don’t know if my chances would be better if I applied undeclared?

Not sure if any schools look at senior year grades, but it looks like my GPA will stay relatively the same, if not, a little bit worse… am I really reaching or do I have ANY chance?

Thanks!

What is your CSU capped weighted GPA 10-11th a-g grades with the 8 semester Honors point bump? You can use the Rogerhub calculator and the UC capped weighted = the CSU capped weighted.

https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/

SDSU admits by eligibility index and major.
So your EI is (CSU Capped weighted GPA x 800)+ (1280). Target EI is 4459 so around a 4300+ can be competitive. SDSU could be a Match to a Reach school depending upon your EI and going Undeclared will not give you a bump. Undeclared is just as competitive as the majority of the other majors at SDSU.

Cal Poly SLO admits by MCA points and major. SLO does not offer Undeclared. SLO also uses 9-11th grades in their GPA calculation with 8 honors point cap. You can calculate your MCA here:

http://mca.netlify.com/

Target MCA around 4500+. Based on your stats, SLO will be a slight Reach to Reach school.

LMU looks like a Match school. USD a slight Reach with your SAT score.

You need some solid Match schools and at least 2 safety schools. Match school suggestions are Cal State Fullerton, Cal Poly Pomona, San Jose State, San Marcos, Cal State LA, Cal State Long Beach etc…

For Safeties, consider San Francisco State, Channel Islands, Dominguez HIlls.

What is your local in-service area Cal State? That campus would be a good safety.

Best of luck and come back after you have calculated your CSU GPA.

LMU and USD will look at Senior grades and probably ask for a Mid-year transcript. The Cal States do not consider Senior grades in their admission decisions but you still need to complete all courses with passing grades to maintain your provisional admission.

Definitely apply to some safety and solid Match schools.

Choosing a major or undeclared may matter at CSUs. For example, here are the threshold eligibility indexes for admission to SJSU for fall 2019:

http://www.sjsu.edu/admissions/impaction/impactionresultsfreshmen/index.html

2950 communication studies
3000 communicative disorders and sciences
3000 philosophy
3850 undeclared
4300 undeclared pre-nursing

Of course, the thresholds could change for fall 2020, and other campuses will differ.

SDSU, LMU, Boulder and USD will probably accept you. You may want to add CSULB, Sonoma and perhaps Chico.
good luck

Thank you so much for the quick response! I calculated it and I have a 3.46 unweighted and a 3.77 weighted, and my calculated EI is a 4296.

I also am going to apply to CSULB, Chico and Channel Islands as safeties.

Based on your EI, SDSU will be a slight Reach but worth an application. SLO will be a Reach.

CSULB would be a solid Match, not a safety. Chico and Channel Islands will be Safeties.

Best of luck.
