I’m a high school student from the United States wondering if I have a good chance of getting into the University of Toronto St. George. I really want to go there as a computer science major, but I don’t think I have much of a chance because I am an International student. No one from my high school has applied there for the past few years, so I really don’t have anyone to compare my stats with. Please help!!
Unweighted GPA: 94.71
Weighted GPA: 96.25
SAT score: 1440 (superscored)
ACT score: 31 (superscore is 32)
AP Scores: 5 (AP World History), 4 (AP US History), 4 (AP Computer Science Principles)
@brownpotato15 CS admissions has become very competitive in the past few years. You have a good chance at acceptance at U of T though. Be aware that acceptance to the CS program at U of T does not guarantee admission to the major. You have to attain certain grades in your first year courses in order to be admitted to the major (or specialist, which is U of T’s term for in depth major). http://web.cs.toronto.edu/program/ugrad/admission.htm
You might wish to look into the University of Waterloo’s CS program. Waterloo CS may be more highly regarded in the US as well. They have a different focus than U of T. U of T is more academically focused while Waterloo, with its co-op program, is more career-focused. Waterloo doesn’t have a grade requirement to be in the major. Once you’re admitted, you’re in. Waterloo is very selective in admissions though. The acceptance rate is somewhere around 10% or below. One disadvantage to applying to Waterloo is that they don’t release the majority of their decisions until May.
Whichever university you apply for, apply in November or December.
Are you taking calculus senior year? You’ll need it for both programs. AP calculus would be definitely beneficial. A SATII math2 score would help too. Waterloo looks for students to take its Euclid test in April (which is part of the reason why they don’t send out decisions until May). Taking it will boost your chances at Waterloo. Getting a high score would boost it even more. The Euclid has to be arranged by your school, so you would have to ask for them to do that.
I’m taking AP Calculus AB senior year. I already took the SAT II Math 2 exam, but I still waiting to get that score.
Sounds like you’re in good shape. Good luck!
