Hi everyone,
I am currently going into my senior year of college as a Mechanical Engineering major with minors in Electrical Engineering and Math at a CSU. I currently have a 3.7 overall GPA and 3.89 major GPA. I am not sure on what my chances are of getting into a good graduate program such as UC Berkeley, Stanford, MIT. I also want to apply to other UCs like Irvine and SD. I have been a part of a bio-mechanics research lab at my university for a year but have not had any publications. I have been a lab assistant for the material science labs for a year also. I have also worked on several engineering teams that take part in engineering competitions like SpaceX Hyperloop and BAJA SAE competitions. I’ve had a total of 3 internships and am in talking for my 4th one. With this information, do I have a good chance at the schools I mentioned earlier?
Your own professors are the ones who can give you the best advice about this. They know where their students have been admitted.
Also, “good” here is relative. It more depends what you want to study in grad school. (Also, MS vs PhD is very important here.) For example Texas Tech might be doing more research in a field you want to pursue vs. say Harvard. Do some more research and talk to your professors on what schools you should apply to.
Your GPA is good but remember that you will be in a pool with students who have an equally good GPA and probably as much research experience as you do. All the schools you named are highly selective because of the large number of applicants. Make sure you find at least one program that you are willing to attend that is not as selective and to which you will likely be admitted. As others have said, your professors can give you suggestions.
