What are my chances of getting into a selective college? (I.e UPenn, UChicago, Cornell, etc)

To start off, I’m very discouraged about applying to any good college in general. To give a bit of back story, I’ve had severe depression and anxiety ever since my sophomore year. I was very depressed during my junior year, though I’m much better no, and I’m currently a high school senior. I had around a 3.0 GPA my freshman year, a 4.0 my sophomore year, (though I had to be withdrawn at the end of the year because I had really bad anxiety) a 3.5 GPA junior year (because of really bad depression) and I now have about a 4.4 GPA this (senior) year. I don’t have many extracurriculars; I tried to join my school’s FFA last year, and I’ve been in my school’s marching band (which I love; I now have a passion for music) for about a year. I’m working on getting high ACT/SAT scores at the moment. Would high ACT/SAT scores compensate for my fluctuating GPA? Is there any hope for me to get into a good college? I don’t think colleges will care that I’ve anxiety and depression, as they’re the most common mental illnesses. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I would suggest you research other schools with reputations different than those of Cornell, Chicago, and Penn.

Not only are your chances low at admission at these schools (I’m going off of your not taken the SAT/ACT yet and your lack of ECs), but they’re incredibly competitive and large–I’d worry you might feel overwhelmed with your anxiety compounded there. Students at Cornell and Chicago aren’t the happiest bunch from my anecdotal knowledge of their experience–I’m generalizing of course but for what it’s worth…

Thank you so much!! I definitely need to look at some other colleges. I can see how they wouldn’t be too happy with all of the stress they’re constantly under. I think once I take my ACT/SAT (I’m taking them soon) that I’ll look at good colleges
