Hey there! I’m an international student following the British Patterned education. I got 6As and 4As at GCSE, 5 A’s at AS (Maths, further maths, physics, economics, arabic) and I’m predicted 5As at A-Level. I got two major awards this year and last year: The highest mark in my country in IGCSE Mathematics, the highest Mark in my country in AS Physics. However, I took the SAT 1 exam this october and I think I covered all marks in the Maths Section but in the English I didn’t do that well probably won’t pass 650. So do I stand a chance of getting into any Ivy League University considering that my SAT score won’t even pass 1450? How about other unis such as Georgia Tech and University of Michigan ? I already got an offer from UCL (UK) and an Interview at the University of Cambridge.
American universities have different priorities for admission than British universities.
The top American universities care a lot about extracurricular engagement. Your grades and test scores establish that you’re qualified for admission, as are 90% of the other applicants. The next question is, what noteworthy things have you done outside of school that set you apart from the other applicants? The answer could be academic (e.g. an award from the International Physics Olympiad or from a research competition), success in a sport, community service, juggling school with a full-time job and family obligations, etc.
For public universities like the University of Michigan or Georgia Tech, and for the need-aware private schools like Cornell, your financial situation also matters. Are you able to pay for the full cost of attendance?
I’d be able to finance my education at Tech and the others. Well in ECA, I’ve done a 55 hour internship at a construction company, I’m Currently tutoring a year 12 student in Further Pure Mathematics, Assisted in Teaching Year 7 Maths, I studied German as a foreign language for two years, participated in Tennis Tournaments, did some debating and MUN at a University, I’m an active member of my School’s Charity committee.
