hello, I am currently a sophomore thinking about applying for my junior year at Andover. I have been an honor roll student for every single quarter since my sixth grade year (I attended a science magnet middle school). I have played guitar for three years and flute for seven (first chair for three years). And I also have volunteered for two hours a week since my sixth grade year and participate in the program 4-H. I also am in my school choir ( highest level) and have been dancing for two years. I also play numerous sports such as swimming, lacrosse, soccer, archery and volleyball all for about four years. Currently I am also the Vice President of my class and am very involved at school. But I am not sure whether to go through testing due to doubt on getting in and the fact that although there are other candidates that in fact do everything I do also HAVE STRAIGHT A’S and I have had honor roll. Will my extracurricular make up for my lack in straight A’s? Please please please help me out!!! Should I go through the application process? (Also I would require financial aid)
Hi @Panther895!
Wow, you have really extensive extracurricular activities! (How do you find time to do it all?)
Anyway, to answer your post, I have a few suggestions and pieces of feedback.
- PLEASE consider repeating the 10th grade at PAA. You will increase your chances of acceptance substantially. Andover takes very few Juniors. You have a much better chance of admission if you apply to the 10th grade. Many, many students do the same at Andover. So, you won’t be alone, and if you are accepted, you will have three years at that amazing school.
- Do study for the SSAT. All top tier BSs are competitive. Study for the test, and if you have the chance even take it twice if your first round is not stellar. Think of it as kind of preparing you for studying for the SATS in a couple of years. It is energy well spent.
- Andover Admissions Officers are far more concerned with the whole person–than screening for the best grades. Mr. Palfrey, the Head of School, has stated they look for kind people. He means this. The students tend to be friendly and respectful and very engaged in school.
- Andover is very generous in regards to Financial Aid.
- If you are exceptional at any of the sports in which you participate, reach out to the coaches. You can find their names and email addresses on the Andover web site.
- As wonderful as Andover is (can you tell I am a big fan, too?) please consider casting a wider net. If you love Andover, I trust you can find some other amazing boarding (or day) schools.
Best of luck, and go for it!
