what are my chances of getting into Georgia?

Junior from Arizona (Phoenix area)

Current unweighted GPA: 3.3
Current weighted GPA: 3.8
By the time I graduate, I will have taken 7 AP courses and 6 honors courses.
My school doesn't rank. Or maybe they just don't tell us until senior year.
First Generation College Student
Multiracial (Hispanic/White)
Jewish

Test Scores:
Just took my SAT today, but on the practice I got about 1880. I took a prep course so I'm hoping for 2000.
I'm also taking my ACT in February. I got a 29 on the practice, I'm hoping for a 30.

Religious Extracurriculars:
Junior year-President of Temple Chai Temple Youth (TCTY, a Jewish youth group)
Sophomore Year-Programming Vice President of TCTY
Senior year-I will most likely be Regional President of the Southwest Region of the National Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY-SW, a large affiliation made up of Jewish youth groups like TCTY from Arizona, Las Vegas, New Mexico, and Texas)
All years-Hebrew High School Student (attend two hours of class every week on topics such as Israel, the Holocaust, etc. Students who complete Hebrew High School receive a special diploma upon graduation)
Six years of Jewish summer camp, including two summers of LTP (Leadership Training Program)
Sophomore year-Youth Endowment Board (the board is given a sum of money and is in charge of determing which charities to distribute the money to)

Athletic Extracurriculars:
Four years of school softball (1 year Freshman, 2 years JV, 1 year Varsity)
Three years of club softball
One year of school basketball

Musical Extracurriculars:
Piano lessons for 10 years
Taught myself guitar (I am also a songleader in NFTY-SW)

Spanish Honorary Club-Sophomore/Junior/Senior
(may run for an officer of one or two of these clubs for senior year)
65 Roses Club (Cystic Fibrosis)-All years
Founder of Camp Swift Club (explained below)

Community Service:
Camp Swift (about 1500 hours)-Camp Swift is a summer camp for underprivileged inner-city children from the Phoenix area. The camp is planned and run by Jewish teenagers who volunteer their time not only during the summer, but throughout the year to plan camp and raise money. (These hours include 12 sessions of camp plus planning and fundraising throughout all four years)
I have participated in other community service projects including playing the piano for retirement home residents, assembling toiletry baskets for Hurricane Katrina victims, volunteering at food banks and homeless shelters, and American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. These other activities add up to roughly 200 hours total.

Other Important (or maybe not important?) Factors:
-I will be paying for my own college/graduate school
-My cousin is my legal guardian. My mother died when I was seven and I don't know who my father is. I'm hoping I can use my experiences to write some compelling essays. Also, if you know of any scholarships for adopted, single-parent children, etc., that would be great!

I'd like to go to medical school eventually, but I don't know if I necessarily want to major in science. I was thinking maybe Risk Management and Insurance, Excersise and Sport Science, or Sport Management.

I know this was really long. Thanks so much for your input!

with a 3.3 UW GPA you do not have a very good chance of getting in. What will your GPA be with a .5 for AP classes at the end of this year? if you get it up to a 3.5 and get a 1900+ you will probably have a good chance for UGA.

good extracurriculars and essays should help! but definitely apply regular if you dont get your GPA up.

yeaaahh your GPA is a little low, but you’re from Arizona and they’re really trying to diversify the place… like I know a lot of white girls with amazing resumes who got deferred! So Idk… try though :stuck_out_tongue: your SAT/ACT and other stuff seems fine.

Thank you so much for your help everyone  I don’t know how much my GPA can go up from here but I’ll definitely try to get high test scores.

Try calculating your GPA the way UGA would, if you already have weighted grades, don’t take away the points. Only use your core academic courses & foreign languages in calculating your GPA. If it is at least a 3.65 then, if you score as good as you say, then I’d say hopefully in. Your ethnicity and state residency will play no role in admissions. You have rigor of classes among other things that UGA values. You have a great shot!

[Advice about the UGA Admission Process](http://ugaadmissions.blogspot.com)

@imthecoolestkid

are you sure ethnicity and state residency play no role? I actually kind of doubt that, because my SAT and course rigor weren’t great at all, but I got accepted. I went to an international school in Japan and am multiracial. maybe they just WANT you to think they don’t care.

mevans414: Since UGA Admissions states specifically that these areas do not play any factor in the decision process, I think that it is not that they “WANT” you to think this, but that it is actually the truth! Everyone has their own idea of what is great or not great (for 1 student, an 1800 is horrible, while another might rejoice if they got this), so it depends upon what your base point is in your own view of yourself. But if a college comes right out and says how they do things, I would suggest you believe them.

mevans414: Please visit the link I shared with you and also go to UGA’s admissions website. The things I listed are not factors for admission.

Alright, well that’s just what I think. as well as a lot of people at my school :p

mevans414: I am guessing a lot of people at your school think this way due to the wonderful world of the rumor mill, as well as a limited view of who they know instead of the facts about the applicant pool as a whole. I am guessing that if you take a closer look at who has been admitted and who has been deferred, you would have a better understanding. And just so you know, the EA process does not look at “amazing resumes”, it looks at the academic side of things.

I am currently a freshman at UGA. I personally think your scores and GPA are great. I got in with
ACT: 29
3 AP classes
“UGA Weighted” GPA: 3.73

Notice how I said “UGA weighted GPA” This is what they are going to use. I am not one hundred percent how to calculate it, but I’m sure you can find it on the website. Also, AP classes help a lot.

As for your extra circular activities, they help. I had close to none when I applied; however, I know a couple people here with low high school GPAs and test scores that did every club and activity possible in high school.

p.s. Assuming you get in, do not live in the sky rises.

thanks so much! :)

You’ll get in easily

Just realized this is from 3 years ago. Awkward.
