What are my chances of getting into the University of Melbourne?

Hi! I’m a second year IB student looking to apply to University of Melbourne as my top choice.
Looking to apply for a Bachelor of Arts degree in majoring in Psychology.

(Just an indication that there are no math prerequisites for bachelor of arts so I’m good with math studies)

I got my predicted IB grades back and am intending to apply early to try and get a conditional offer. My predicted IB is a total of 35 points.

My grades are as follows:
Business management HL - 6
DT HL - 5
Psychology HL - 5
Thai A Lang/Lit - 5
English A Lang/Lit - 6
Math studies - 6

(+ 2 core points for TOK and EE)

Also, any opinions on conditional offers and whether theres a point in trying out for them?
My college counsellor said there’s no point, but I can apply early if I would like to,

Please let me know!!

Check out their website for your intended major. Melbourne offers guaranteed admission if you meet a certain academic requirement, however, I’m not sure what that would be for the IB curriculum.
Cheers!

So, in a slightly snarky mood on this Monday morning, I will say that imo Melbourne is a bad idea for you.

Why?

Because Aussie unis don’t hold your hand- they expect you to figure things out for yourself, and you weren’t able to work out how to find the page on their website that gives the IB score requirement for psych. Took me 1 click.

Are you a student in the US? US GC’s aren’t always familiar with conditional offers. Given the relationship between the IB score required for guaranteed entry & your predictions I don’t see why your GC would say that there is no point. If you are applying from Thailand (just a guess, based on your subject language), I am surprised b/c there are plenty of Thai students at Melbourne.

Hi, I did check their website for all the information. In fact, I did all my research prior posting this discussion. So I knew that their IB entry requirements for Bachelor of Arts is 31 for 2019 as well as Bachelor of Science. My reason for posting this discussion is because I am just worried about not being selected, not that I wasn’t “able to work out how to find the page”.

Now that we got that out of the way, I am a student applying from Thailand. My college counsellor said that there is no point in applying for a conditional offer because in the end, you send off your final IB grade in both cases. I just wanted your input on this.

Your headline asks for chances of admission. If you achieve your predicted marks- or even miss by a few points- you are guaranteed admission. Is there a particular reason that you are worried?

If your actual question is, ‘is there any merit in sending in my application before I have achieved the necessary marks, when I am predicted to exceed the mark for which admission is guaranteed?’ and your counselor is essentially saying ‘you don’t need to bother to apply early- no rush, wait for after you have your achieved marks’, then it’s just an individual call. Imo, might as well do it- esp if that is your clear 1st choice: it signals that you are interested, gets a place marked for you, and may get you into the info loop a little earlier- and I don’t see any down sides. But that’s just my opinion- if your counselor has experience with Melbourne, and prefers to do all the apps at once. I would take their advice over mine.

It did say on the entry requirements page that although I have met all requirements, selection is not guaranteed. I’ve done so much research on this that instead of being confident, i’m more anxious. The overseas representative for Uni of Melbourne told me to apply with predicted grades, but my college counselor said otherwise. So now i have conflicting views.

Go with experience: if your counselor has had a lot of experience getting students from your school into Melbourne, go with her/him. If your counselor doesn’t have direct, or at least a lot of comparable experience, go with the rep. Good luck- I know this is an anxious time

Thank you for all your help. I’ll speak to my counsellor again and see how it goes!
