I am a junior and I live in state and will be applying early.
My unweighted GPA is a 3.92, and my weighted is a 4.17 (i’m bringing it up a little this semester.)
My ACT score is a 31 (planning on bringing it up as well)
I’m planning on taking 7 AP classes through high school
I am a member of the marching band, winterguard, and I played volleyball freshman year.
I am planning on getting a job and/or internship this summer.
I am the founder and president of a volunteer club at my school (that helps out an organization on UNC chapel hill campus)
I may get a marching band and volunteer group leadership role as well.
If there’s any other questions, please ask!
Get your ACT up and you should have good chances. Your EC’s are good, but your coursework isn’t very rigorous IMO. UW GPA is solid but your weighted shows that you didn’t really challenge yourself much. Either way, if you apply ED with a 33+ ACT, then you should have really solid chances of getting in.
And make sure to challenge yourself senior year with a lot of AP’s (aim for 5). For ED/EA, your grades won’t matter (unless you get C’s) and it will end up showing the college that you plan on keeping up the rigor based on projected senior coursework.
Thanks for the input! I will definitely raise my ACT, but unfortunately chapel hill doesn’t offer early decision…
I think the reason why my W GPA is low is because I’ve gotten 2 Bs so far in AP classes and one in a normal class. I have taken many honors, and have taken APHUGE, APES, AP Psych, APUSH (currently) and next year am planning on taking AP physics, AP calc AB and AP calc BC.
However, if you apply early action, do schools even take your senior grades into consideration during the application process?
Thanks!
I think you will be fine. My son got in with a 29 ACT early admission. UNC is very holistic
Get those EC’s up. As the previous poster said UNC is holistic and looks at all sides of an applicant. Really show the passion you’re putting into your activities and think about how you’re goig to write about them in your common app essay and supplements
Like everyone has mentioned, just be well-rounded. Your leadership positions in organizations will be extremely beneficial to your application,as it shows what you’re able to balance in addition to coursework. I had very competitive EC’s and a strong GPA (4.0UW, 4.7W) that it was able to balance out for my extremely low ACT score (26). Also, make sure to be open in your essay! For me, I avoided talking about activities (because they’ll already see that) and spoke more about my life experiences with culture and adversity.I think this helped my application as well.
You should be fine. Make sure to start applications, resume, and recommendations early. Spend time on strong essays and no essay is ever optional.
Because you’re in-state, how many kids have been accepted from your school these past three years? And what is your class rank? What we’ve noticed, you can consider yourself safe if you’re in the top 70th percentile of the accepted number. Ex: If 50 students were accepted each year, and your class rank is 35 or better, you can feel reasonably confident of your chances.
